    And while I'm thinking about it.. why are all the Comets build numbers so much higher than the Mav's?

    They certainly couldn't have waited to build them all later in the year. :huh:

    Probably true but the VINs no doubt went higher than 398474, along with the KC Mav VIN of 347741 only add to 546215(remember we must subtract 100000 from each plant, 100001 is the first build)... Total prod was 578914 so we're still missing 32,699 builds, I doubt those were all KC Mav...

    Also a never stated fact(that I've seen anyway) is that 15,700 1970 Falcons were also built at KC, so total consecutive VIN numbers from KC would increase by that amount... Or in other words the highest Mav VIN from KC is going to be 15,700 units high... Actually that includes any Mav built after Falcon production ceased in late Dec '69, plus Mav VINs after '70 Falcon production began(approx Aug'69) will be increased... Many of the consec VIN numbers for '70 Falcon are going to be mixed with '69.5 Mav production...

    All Mercury VINs begin at 500001(later years Mercs began at 600001), so your Comet is the 50,639 serialized at KC in '71...

    Just thinking about this thread today and the seperation of the 69.5 and 70's on Paul's list. I figured that I would get the ball rolling on the photo verification of 69.5 Mavericks and post a photo of mine from August 2006 when I began taking it all apart :)

    I was thumbing through my library of Ford-related books the last few days and I think I may have a way to at least approximate the separation of 69.5 and 70's. It may not perfectly work out in VIN numbers, as Craig has eluded, but it may give us a narrower field to search. I'll keep you guys/gals posted when I have somethin intelligible to report.:hmmm:

    That is why I thought that just a simple photo might work better to verify a 69.5 than just an assumption that every car prior to any certain VIN had the ignition in the dash pod :)

    I found the date that Marti and Ford 999 both stated that my Maverick was built, in St Thomas, on October 27, 1969 on schedule (with ignition under dash) :huh: :cry:

    Okay. I have a book called "Standard Catalog of FORD 1903-1990". This book lists production figures for all of Ford's cars through the years, options, prices, weights, etc. The funny thing is that it lists a Maverick for the 1969 model year, saying that "The Maverick was a mid-year introduction model for 1969."


    The book lists 127,833 units for 1969, and 451,081 for 1970. Add the two together, we get 578,914 which is the same total number included in the list for "1970".

    Now, mav1970's VIN is 234851. Subtract 100,001 from it (serial sarting point) and we get the 134,850th unit, which is just outside of 127,833. But, because we know cars weren't built in the same order they were serialized, AND given the late October 27, 1969 build date of mav1970's car I would be tempted to say that his car is one of THE last ones built with a dash-mounted ignition switch.

    Also, because the Grabbers after 1970 had their own body number (62D) the production numbers are listed specifically each body number. I will work to include these stats in the list, along with 2 and 4-doors. Oh, and maybe I'll do the same for the Comets:rofl2:
