Lots of people remove the vinyl roof. And there are some that even add a vinyl roof. Removing is not a big deal but usually you will find rust under there. Its alot of work because you have to sand all the old glue off, fix what needs fixin, and paint.

Factory vinyl top is off of mine. I kept the chrome trim & painted the top a gloss black metallic...

I took my vinyl top off..lots of goo to remove. Thought I could remove it with chemicals, but I ended up having to sand the entire thing down to metal, and primer the top. Tried lots of chemicals, even striaight acetone...no good. Had to use a sander to remove the glue.

Luckily, mine was garage kept, and had no rust underneath...just a fist-sized dent at the front that I could fix with bondo.

When I got my Mav, It had the top removed and someone painted the roof black. (without any prep work!!!) you could imagine what it looked like...:rofl2: .

I had to strip the entire roof to bare metal, used a 4in grinder with some sanding wheels (flapper style) didnt take too long. I primered the roof and ground the tabs off that held on the halo trim. Welded up the holes where it attached (Amazingly without catching the headliner on fire). :49:

mine came with the full top. had to fill in the holes, took it to metal and now that its repainted you cant tell. still having some issues with the chrome for the front and rear windows being a little loose, because it was big enough for the vinyl to fit under.

Ha, this is funny, I just came in from the garage and I was peeling a bit of the vinyl top off my car :yup: I figured since it was orange, I'd have a hell of a time finding the correct material to replace it, and I saw a nice metallic Orange on a new Harley the other day, it'll look sweet on there... (but I haven't pulled the whole thing off yet, I need to get the nerve up)

From the sonds of it unless your car was not exposed to rain removing and putting it back on woudl be a good idea to catch the rust before it causes lots of damage!

I am scared as hell to look under mine, I have a little seepage in the back above the flip out window! Taking it to the body shop for estimate Tuesday
wish me luck on that one! I'll see what kind of rust preventive measures there are for modern Vinyl tops before putting it back on.
