I know when I helped my friend with the 32/351C motor and we made the sheetmetal top, at first the plenum was mostly flat..............the car ran good (the motor is an old NASCAR motor w/11:1cr) and he had a 4spd close ratio top loader and 3:50 gears in the 9". The car was a dog below 2800rpm but when it hit 3000rpm you needed a neck brace all the way to 7500rpm. That's when we changed to the small Holleys...I'm not sure but think they were 390cfm..........we also put a piece of aluminum shaped like an upside down V in the bottom of the plenum and tacked it in place (the plenum was open and mostly flat and blended into the runners). We4 also changed to a 4:11 center section I had. When we took it out again it started to come alive at around 2000rpm and at 3500rpm it felt like you had turned on the NO2..........................I had always heard that tunnel rams come alive at high rpms, liked high compression and gears.............but then again they were more race type intakes rather than street. I just bought a Weiand Tunnel ram (with both tops) form Mike on this forum for a project a guy wants me to build..........he has a 63 Falcon he wants to make into a gasser............wants a 289 with tunnel ram..........and wants to make 450hp.......................kind of an interesting project, so just picking your brain on how your car was setup.
I had originally planned to use my 4V open chambered heads (2.19 intake valves) and make 9 to 1 compression - I was simply thinking on what was available as pump gas in the community - at the same time that we were looking at rebuilding my original CJ heads, a set of closed chamber quench heads from a Boss 351 became available so we went with a set of forged KB reverse dome pistons sitting on 6 inch Chevy rods to shed some of the big jump in compression the Boss heads would have made with these heads - I know I'll be running premium with the possibility of some additives - Comp Cams and my speed shop both recommended the deeper gears knowing that I had a 4 speed and not an auto - my cam is an Extreme Energy and also doesn't come right in at idle so the plan was to help myself out at low end with the gears
Around 7000. He wants this to be an inexpensive motor so I've already bought some new Pro-Comp heads (from my machine shop as the original owner bought them new bare and had the shop put Manley valves, Comp springs, good retainers and keepers and seals. checked the rocker geometery and surfaced the heads as they were more than .015 out...and then couldn't pay for them) and I got them for the price of the work+parts. The Weiand tunnel ram with both tops and looking for a 289. Personally I don't think the motor will make 450hp with mostly stock parts, but may be 370hp or so............we will see.
well i fugured there will be some rake to the car,if not it may be alittle to much, ive never changed the carb angle on any of my cars i know guys who have ,never really seen it make much difference as long as pump can keep fuel bowls filled but i always had maybe 2 deg rake with about 6 deg.motor rake ,my cars always lift in the back as the front goes up,witch i always felt is the way i like my cars to work, plant rear tires pushing them down witch lifts body in rear and front, now i mean if your yanking the front wheels 3 feet in the air, that may not work lol ......
