what 9" rear end will bolt right in a maverick?

    isnce we are on the subject of rearends i have a 73 mav all stock rear..when you place it in gear it has a terrible CLUNK..checked the tranny mount , and the u joints and both ok..WTF.....is going on is the mav rearend a problem? jackked up the rear of car can move tire about 5 inches before other tire moves..(not a posi) i will be more than happy to take any advice give..having a real brain fart on this one..thanks matt yergntiger93@yahoo.com

    could be a few things. fist thing that comes to mind is the spider gears are really worn out. thats cheap and easy to fix. next, spanner could have backed off causing the ring gear to move away from the pinion. this is not very likely. last the gear set is really worn out. this is not very likely either.
    is the clunk the only problem or does the diff make a whining noise when driving?

    dont hear a winnning just the clunk..the drive shaft where it bolts to the rearend is a little loose but its not the bolt i think its inside of the rearend..with the rearend jaced up (both sides)and holding one tire the other tire can move about 5 or so inches..is that too much play?

    5 inches about right. the slop in the pinoin that you describe is the gap between the ring and pinoin, the slop in the spider gears and the gap between the splines of the axle shafts combined.
    if you idle rpm is to high it will cause a clunk in to reverse.
