My deluxe report and statistics report both say "red full vinyl roof " but the paperwork from SMS calls it "red tweed".

Does your pattern/texture match the sample from SMS?

Identical to sample in every way other than being solid color.

Got rid of those rowdy ass Magnaflow mufflers and had the Walker Quiet Flow installed in their place... Still has a little bark but soooo much quieter at cruse speeds...

Was finally able to locate a guy who is the son of the man who owned the dealership where my Comet was originally purchased! He was only about 12 years old at the time, but he was very interested in hearing about my car. He is also a fan of Mavericks and Comets, and we shared some stories, and had some good conversation. I sent him the Marti reports, build sheet, and pictures, and he had some interesting facts for me, relating to my low back buckets and manually changed build sheet. Here is an excerpt from one of his emails:

"The seats being shortened if I recall correctly was due to the fact that this was the only alternative for people who wanted a GT , bucket seats rather than bench , but who were short and therefore had difficulty seeing over the high back seats for backing up , etc.
I do know absolutely for sure that the hand writing on the factory order that reads " 8 A" is my father 's handwriting"

So, hearing about the seats reminded me of something I heard a very long time ago. When my father bought the car, he was told it was originally purchased by a Ford exec who bought it for his daughter, but when he gave it to her, she hated it. Never thought much about that, jus sounded like useless information passed down owner to owner and I suspected it wasn't even true. But now that makes sense, if you were buying this car for your daughter, you might think the seats are too high for her to look behind while backing up. And if the dealer offered to shorten them, well why not? They were probably willing to do anything to sell that freak looking car that nobody wanted, been on the lot for four months, and now the '72 models were available...

That's a great story, it's cool to be able to talk with people that had connections like that. When I first bought my GTO in 88 it still have the dealer plate frames on it. At the time I was working in an auto parts store and we had just hired a guy I had know for some time but never knew his last name. Turned out he was the son of the local Pontiac dealer owner that sold my GTO new. When I got the car I was told it was supposed to have been a Ram Air 1 car but the dealer had issues getting one so he ended up buying a base 400 car. The son actually confirmed the story which I thought was awesome though not as good as it would have been if I had bought a matching numbers Ram Air car for the $100 I paid for the one I had.

So apparently he pulled build sheet out of car after it arrived at dealership and remarked it??? Doesn't seem very likely...

Yeah I was confused by that. Does the build sheet originate at the dealer when the order is placed?

The build sheets(there are multiple copies) are printed when car is ready to go down assembly line, dealer has zip to do with this process... I have a couple here that the next car scheduled behind one being built was scrubbed, so were two sheets in car... Second one has large X made with one of the grease tip markers that were common to era... Another has body & trim info for two other cars scribbled on it in ink... Sheets were basically meant to be discarded at end of assembly but generally ones attached to some of the components(seats especially) were left behind...

I believe it was the Doll's that found two other Maverick & a Comet sheet in one of their cars(four total)...

I have saved LOTS of build sheets over the years. No way a dealer could have written anything on it. It basically served as installation instructions as it rolled down the assembly line.

No way what so ever? So if it were in the seat and they were modifying the seat they couldn't have written on it with the seat out? I have never pulled one from a Ford, haven't been lucky enough to find one but in some of the GM cars I've had you could easily put a letter and a number on it without removing it from the seat springs.
