Not by the dealer, the build sheets don't exist till shortly before the car is on the assembly line(I'd guess previous day at earliest)... Anything other than type was likely written by a line supervisor...

The build sheet was created by the computerized order image, that info comes from order(s) submitted by dealer(If the new girl in computer input screws up who knows what you'd get)... BTW order image is also what Marti uses for his report info...

As Craig stated, the build sheet is the instructions on how the car is to be assembled... Exterior & interior color, plus any/all options... Most of the std components are also called out, stuff like engine, trans and rear axle(code & tag number), muffler(which is likely the complete exhaust system), color for correct driveshaft, springs etc(various color stripes are used for ID) ... Of course tire & wheel info is included, as well as hubcaps etc, etc, etc...

I'm well aware of what a build sheet is, it's purpose and where it originated. What I am saying is if the dealer pulled the seat to cut it down and the build sheet is in the seat bottom the dealer could very easily hand write two digits on the sheet as the OP reports happened to his. It could very well be done without even removing it depending on how the sheet is positioned in the car. That said, it seems pretty unlikely a dealer would take the time and effort to do that.

Sorry I didn't quite understand your point in previous post...

Everything you say is true, wasn't very likely a dealer would modify a build sheet... As I said earlier were basically discards once build was completed, serving no purpose... Data tag/sticker would give service dept the pertinent info, if anything dealer would probably toss it in trash...

Of course once sheet is found in a 20-30-40 year old car it's treasure trove if one has any idea how to decipher it...

It's always cool to find one, the only cars I was lucky enough to find them in were cars I could care less about having one for! Not one of the Torinos (70 GT and 70 Type N/W) I had produced one. My GTO didn't have one but both plain old Tempest parts cars did.

My first one was from my Cobra, before that I was oblivious of their existence... Put it in a protective cover and that's where it's been for last 40+ years... After I found mine, I started looking for them in parts cars, junkyard, etc... Depending on which assembly plant did build could be in several different places...

Mine's still stuck to the floor under the rear seat in my 70 Torino GT. Someday maybe it will get unstuck and put in the book with my original invoice. - Matt

Must be a Lorain build... Sheets from that plant are usually under carpet & stuck to floor...
