This is right. From what I have read, 1 inch out from seated is about optimum. Since my front U-joint is bad, I will insert the yoke (minus the shaft) and pull it out 1 3/4" and see if it wiggles compared to one inch out. If there is no wiggle at 1.75" out....case closed. I may be splitting hairs, but I dont want to come back to this if I still have a vibration. I checked that bushing in the tail housing when the trans was out and it was OK. I need to check for complimentary angles that are equal (pinon angle) at both ends of the driveshaft after I get something to measure that.

I think tailshaft bushing should be worn bad if driveshaft is vibrating...:yup:
    how did you check it?

I bought a new bushing before transmission installation. When I removed the tail housing to R&R, the original one looked fine....so I measured the inner diameter of the new one and it was the same as the old. 1.5" as I recall, and my yoke was 1.49". The vibration was small at 45mph, annoying at 55, and worse at 65.....and I am replacing both U-joints as one was sloppy for sure and the other just because. I finally got an app on my phone to measure angles, so I will check angles tomorrow. I dont think I put more than 200 miles on the car yet, so the tranny and drive shaft have only been together that much....both from different junk cars. The driveshaft has no visible dents, but could be junk as they commonly are when a forklift gets involved with placing cars in a junkyard.

Download tremec tool box from the app store, it has a driveline angle finder with a go/no go.

I heard of that, but went to the "Windows" app center in my windows phone to get something my phone would operate, and found that the pinion is angled down 4* in relation to the end of my transmission. So, I am guessing 4* worth of shims with the fat side toward the front of the leafspring pad, or raise the tranny up 4* to put it in a parallel plane, or two degrees on each end.... The car went from a 6 to a v-8 and the rear end didnt change.....so should I assume the engine angle is the one to change? Is it ok to hash this out in "what did I do today?"

Did the 4.5” BS on rear give you any issues at leaf springs? Sounds like an awesome day for the car

Went to P&P and left with a heat sink for a TFI installation, and got a slip yoke from a 91 E250 van. It is 6 5/8" long and has almost no wear on it. I will need to use a 1310/1330 u joint, but the extra 5/8" will give me about 5/8" more yoke inside the transmission. it slides in with far less slop than the old one.

Had to go up to the foothills of the smokies to check on a piece of property that has been robbed... They took everything, wiring in the walls, windows a car and a truck... Basically anything metal or of any value... :mad:Mav done great tho,few little issues, but nothing bad, actually got 21mpg... Added some bucket seats before I left, made it ride so much better :yup:

Finally finished up stereo installation in the Stallion. Clarion head unit, Clarion 4 channel amp, Polk 6x9s in the rear package tray and some Polk 5" in the kick panels. On a 76 there in no room for anything bigger behind the kick panels especially on the driver side with the e brake pedal there. I am very happy with the sound quality. Since this car is more about cruising to places its nice to have some decent sounds

This had to be the longest it has ever taken me to install a stereo . Bad back has taken its toll on me

I have to use a .25" spacer for clearance. That gave me about a half inch between the spring and tire.

Having a set of Hedman 88400 headers installed. I would do it myself, but if any "mods" need to be done, this shop has the resources to do it. Also having the exhaust inspected for leaks, as I can smell fumes if the car is sitting still and running. Just hope it doesn't cost too much!!!
