It's a little goofy, but here's some info. The LT1/LT4 T56 has a traditional SBC bellhousing. So it will swap to any Chevy. It will also swap to a Ford using any kit that adapts a Chevy tranny, and using a Chevy clutch disc of the correct diameter. The LSx T56 is totally unique to that engine family. There is a Viper T56, and it is the strongest of the bunch. I am not sure, but I think it has a removeable bell. Then there is the aftermarket T56. It definately has a removeable bell and is built on the Viper platform. You can buy this new for an SBF. $$$! They make plenty of ways to adapt the tranny. The problem is getting it to fit a Maverick. The floor pan and tranny tunnel needs major surgery.
the t-56 has kind of a 1/2 bell housing. you there is one for 302 fords. the gm t-56 used in the f bodys is a weak one. you want to get the one from a viper or ford cobra. those are stronger ones and the ones that you can get through the aftermarket companys.
GM T56 trannys have weak synchros! They are literally made from a cardboard like material. I found that using synthetic Honda ATF makes them last way longer than Dexron 2. They don't use gear oil... they use ATF. I had one that ground into every gear and popped out of 3rd regularly after 40k miles. I put synthetic Honda ATF in it, along with a touch of liquid teflon, and I powershifted through another 40k miles without the issues I mentioned. I don't know how, but it worked. I got the tip off an F-body site way back when. The version with the 1/2 bell is the LSx version. It is unique and will not adapt to other engines for various reasons. The LTx version is normal T5 style.
And the Winner is: So after all the Great input, I picked up a 3:55 rear end at the Columbus Ohio Swap Meet. Thanks again Kirk
