The ather day I took one of the back wheels off my 73 Maverick and tried to put it on the back of my 74 Maverick and it would not fit. The lugs did not stick out enuff to put the nuts on. Both cars have the same rear ends. Is it the wheel? Is it me ? All wheels are 14" All wheels look the same. All hubcaps fit. Maybe I'm just stupid. Can someone help me.

Thanks Paul, I remember it would not go all the way over the hub. Would the entire rear end and drive shaft from the 74 drop in to the 73 with no problems? Both cars have the same 250 motor and C4 transmission.

You should be able to pull the axles shafts out and swap them. Leave the housings bolted to the cars.

Paul, can I please ask you one more question? Do you think the driveshaft of the 73, and the 74 are the same length? The reason I ask is, I have a loud banging sound coming from under the 73 towards the back. I had the axels swhiched out from the 74. No improvement. I had the universal joint by the rear end changed. No Improvement. I saw no problem with the universal joint by the transmission Evan after trying to move it up and down, so I did not change it. So, the only thing I can think of is, gears in the rear end or driveshaft. I know it's not the wheels. But it's getting louder.

No, I'm just trying to teach myself a thing or two on the 73 and 74 Mavericks and hopefully fix the 73. It's just fun to try and do the best that I can.

not Paul but the banging noise could be a broken or bad shock, maybe even a spring bushing.
the driveshafts should be the same.

The pinion bearings may be bad, also. Is there any whining noise while decelerating? When you let of the throttle, is that when you hear the clunk? Usually if the bearings are gone and you have lost the pre-load on the pinion, the seal tends to show leakage around the yoke. With your drive shaft out, give the yoke on the differential a good wiggle (up and down, side to side) to check the bearings. If you rotate the yoke, there will/should be a little bit of play (aka backlash), which is perfectly normal. Like Frank said, the drive shafts will be the same length (assuming they are both 4dr).

Yes thay are 4 doors. No whining noise. As I start moving it begins. Loudest at about 20mpr. Can't here it above 50mpr. As I slow down it gets louder until I stop. As I start out again it begins slowly until I reach the 20mpr. Where it's the loudest. Thanks everyone for all the help. I will continue to work on it when it gets a little wormer up hear in Montana. I Let you know.
