ok....so that would be a no to the shakles...got ya......and get the 4 leaf springs and put the stock equipment back in ...got ya now after i put the 4 leaf springs in....will i still need the traction bars?
Try it and see. When I went to 4-leafs I was able to get rid of the traction bars, but my tires are not real wide. They will spin easily. If your tires have more bite you may need bars.
I LOVE SHACKLES!!! i also love to "dare to be different" and "devil's advocate" and "for the underdog" and all that jazz. I use shackles AND air shocks to get my ass end up high enough that my SIDE PIPES dont drag! I know you guys hate all of that, but I want my 74 to look like 1974. Not 2005. Wide rear tires, narrow front tires, butt in the air, (eventually) a huge chrome blower, a bass-boat metal-flake, two-toned paint job, vinyl (not leather) seats like my dad's jet boat from 1976. All the "old guys" will get a tear in their eye when they see my car...
Check out dad's boat, after he first bought it and before modifications. Old picture...they didn't even have the word "digital" back then.www.geocities.com/scottcodon@sbcglobal.net/jpgetc/goldendaze2
You're right...I'm gettin tears already...just not sure it's the same reason you're thinkin.
I think it would have been just as dangerous and look just as stupid in the seventies as it would in 2005. It NEVER looked good, people back in the seventies just didn't know any better! That's my opinion and i'm sticking to it......but you know what they say about opinions!!!!!!!
In the '70's, everyone who had a "hot rod" were young - teens and early 20's. We took the cheap or less expensive route, if you will. Shackles were the cheapest way to raise a car; air shocks was a little better and a little more money. Also, remember that wide, lower profile tires were not available in the '70's. A G60-15 was a tall, as well as a wide tire. I am a car guy from the '70's. I want my car to look 70-ish, but I also want to take advantage of newer, better, and safer technology and developments, too. I had thought I wanted to paint my '73 metal-flake, candy apple red like we did in the '70's. I thought that until a painter asked, "You want your car to look like a bass boat?" Hmmmm...I'm thinking different paint schemes now.
I think I'll go for the Oklahoma look....you know, shackles adjusted to the TALLEST setting, multiple colors of primer, exhaust held up with bailing wires, and A HUGE HONKIN CB antenna on the trunk. Then maybe I'll go get a deer out of season and tie it to the hood. But I'll have to be careful not to lay it on the HUGE PLASTIC spray painted hood scoop. I LOVE SHACKLES NOT The sad thing is we have a number of cars like that here - haha.
.... walks in.... reads thru thread.... *sigh*..... hangs head, turns around and walks back out..... "guilty" poor handleing here i come! my car came without them... BUT my cregars won't fit if i don thave them in cuz the leaf springs were almost straight... too bad i can't just cannibalize my van.... stupid van/truck frame
Almost sounds like my car , but the shackles are on my jeep , the cb antenna is on the roof , and I have two diecast hood scoops , not plastick .
Rando, Kinda sounds like my car. I call it the Texas look. Actually, I don't really plan on all the 70's mods and paint (I don't think...?). I just said that to pull all of your chains. But, one of the best things about my project is I don't really know what I want to do with it yet, and everything I have done can be undone (so far). The unending questioning and rethinking myself, with input from wife, family, and all you guys, makes the journey so much fun. Probably (almost) as much fun as driving the completed project.
