I work at a Honda dealer in the parts dept (24years). I remember back a few years ago when they had new car orientation for new customer the Honda Rep would bring a Fram filter VS a factory Honda filter. Then end meaning was shame on you if you used a Fram and then came to the dealership with a related issue. In other words Honda strongly advised against using Fram on their cars.
im sure honda wanted to sell there filters and i have no problem with that. i just wanted to know what is wrong with a fram filter? i have no loyalty to any at the moment. just like to have all the facts.
Not sure on the specifics but for them to single out Fram and warn customer not to use them they must be a problem somehow.
some good reading if you google fram oil filters, you be the judge. I lost 10 lb oil pressure when I used fram, with other info from the internet is how I decided no frams. me,,, napa gold, motorcraft
The Fram housing is thinner, the one way valve is not reliable (leading to bleed back of oil when the engine is not running), the filtering media is below par. There were more issues as well, but having said all that...I never had one fail. But I have had some suspicious oil pressure issues with them. I fire my motors with them, but shift to the Wix at the first oil change.
cut one open and you'll see what all the fuss is about. you'll need to compare it to a good quality one such as a motorcraft or wix so you can see the differences
I'm not surprised, Fram filters will get the job done on most any normal car out there, just not mine. I'll add to the following list. They have less media than most other filters, they use cardboard end caps on the media, where the media comes together it is glued (lightly at best). The reasons this is bad.....less media clogs faster (normally not an issue when service properly), I have been involved first hand in an engine that failed due to the cardboard failing and plugging oil passages and in classes when we have had the filters open you can easily separate the pleats where the media is glued together (instant bypass of dirty oil). You may not "notice" any issues running a Fram but it could be shortening your engines life without knowing it. Unless you run an oil scan and open/inspect your filters you'll never know............
Not to mention that FoMoCo won't pay the warranty claim if your VCT system fails or any other internal engine part fails due to an inferior filter coming apart and clogging the oil system.
I use the Motorcraft filter. Interesting information. http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html
Now i know the fact's and armed with the knowledge from that read, i am going to stay with the FL1. thanks for the info!
ok, so the jury is in and it seems that wix, Purolator or Motorcraft are the favorites and almost everyone hates fram thanks everyone.
