hi i am working on my car for 4 years now. I have fixed my rear frame floor rust ect.I installed new brake line and fuel the car is ready to be reassembled but i would like to paint it before because all windows and interior is removed. But the problem is i am a student so i dont have money to send the car in a bodyshop for painting. All my friend tell me to get the car running now and paint it later. What should i do ?

    Painting Car Later

    Hello Jean:
I would recommend you select a color you like NOW and before you reinstall the glass into the framing ... PAINT the underside areas that you won't be able to reach later on after the glass is installed. A good paint shop could set you up with a couple of spay cans of paint that would match your selected color to complete the project. By all means , make any repairs to these areas FIRST before you paint. After the trim is put back in place around the glass it wouldn't show.Thats my take on it.:)

It's nice to put the car together, and work out any bugs before it's painted, plus there's always something else you'll want to do...and it's no fun if you have to worry about the paint. Do what you can afford, and enjoy the car. :)

Remember that if you are doing the headliner....in must be done before the glass goes back in. Assuming you meant you have the windshield and back glass out.

Personally I'd rather get the car going and work out the bugs....then do the body work and paint.

I would paint it first, just my opinion. Paint it then reassemble it. In the end you will know you have a car painted where it should be and not skipped over because u wanted it running.

You can put it together and drive/enjoy it now. You can allways get a cheap macco :vomito:paint job(not so cheap anymore) and worry about doing it right in the future when you have the time, $$$, and skills to do it yourself the right way. Or you can just bomb the car with some black primer for now and :chirp: enjoy. It really depends on what you can afford as opposed to what you want. Good luck!!!

This may not help you much....but this is the way I've always done cars and I've done a bunch. First is to get everything together in one piece...sort of a mock up I guess. I get the car in one piece as far as I can including body components and such. Get it in good running order as far as the driveline goes. Then the suspension and brakes. Maybe then exhaust and some fine tuning.

Once that's all in order I start a teardown...usually complete removal of the frt clip, doors and interior. The headliner is always first to be replaced with me if needed. Then get the glass set. Fix all of the rust and do the bodywork. Prep and paint the jams. Then paint the engine compartment. Get the whole car blocked out and reassemble as far as possible. Then I spray the whole car at once so it all matches and do the final detailing and reassembly.

Now I would consider this a driver redo....but mine have all turned out nice. I know that a bones up restoration starts with a stripped unibody and installing the glass after it's been painted, but mine are drivers. Plus I can tape off a windshield better than a glass guy can install a glass without damage.
