Zippy, you'll learn the most by just visiting the forum daily. Click on "New Posts" in the title bar and read any posts that look interesting. There is nothing about these cars that hasn't been posted at least once. We're certainly happy to have you here. Enjoy!
Welcome Welcome from Northeastern Illinios. Like Razorsharp say's, lots of gud info on this forum. Also, check out the tech article and techincal sections Im sure u'll find something useful there. I surely have.
The comet and maverick are almost identical. 75 was the first year when power brakes were available. Its also the first year that catalityc converters were standard. Its also the year when the fewest mavericks were produced. Something unique to this year is the idiot light that tells you when your getting low fuel economy. Almost any part interchanges between the years. I have 71 bumpers on mine to give it a sleeker look.
Thanxs RayzorSharp for ur kind words and replying back to my posts. I'm glad I found this site and I know that I'll find many friends here I also hope to get some ideas about how to fix up mine and hopefully find her a good name. I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4x4 SUV which I love BUT there's NO replacing the Ford Mavericks these are #1's to me!
Thanxs Maverick75, you sure told me alot that I did'nt know! I did'nt realize just how many people really do like Mavericks & Comets I have alot to learn but I know where to come when I need to know something about my Maverick..Happy, Oh Yeah! What would you recommend about the car sitting for a year? What would be the first thing I should do/check for ?? Thanxs, Zip...
Welcome from Summerville, SC. Sorry I missed this until now. Here's what I would reccomend checking on the car: 1. The BRAKE System! (pads, shoes, lines, etc.) 2. Check the Tires. (dry rot, tread depth, bubbles, etc.) 3. Check the Belts & Hoses. 4. Change the Fuel Filter. 5. Change the Oil, Tans. Fluid, and Filters. 6. Once it's up and driving, take it to your local auto parts store and have them do an Alternator / Battery test. Most places do the test for free. If they don't, go to one that does. Another thing I do, but it isn't necessary, is I run a can of Seafoam Fuel Treatment / Cleaner with a full tank of Premium gas through my cars that have sat for any period of time. I do it to take care of anything that might have happened while it was sitting. Hope this helps, -Scott H.
Thanxs Scott for responding back I did'nt know what to do about this b/c I knew that when a car sits for a while things will dry rot. How would you get the old gas out of the car? Thanxs Again! Zip...
Welcome from carthage sd. what ive been told is if tank is below half u could easily fill tank with new and add seafoam like mentioned. and run her to almost empty. should clear up.
I would just empty out the whole fuel tank. Also check it for any pin holes and rust. No one reproduces the tanks for the earlier cars, but they do reproduce the one for the 75. You can pick one up at any NAPA auto parts. They have it listed for a 76 though.
No problem, I'm happy to help when I can. That depends on how much is in there. If it's less than a 1/4 tank I wouldn't worry about it. I would just throw in a can of Seafoam and fill it up with Premium. If it's more than 1/2 tank, I would get a couple of cheap gas cans to catch the old gas and a cheap syphon and get as much of the old gas out as possible through the filler tube. Once that was done, I would throw a can on Seafoam in there and fill it up with Premium. If it's between 1/4 and 1/2 tank, you could use either method. It's your choice as to how to procede. Fair warning though, if it's close to 1/2 tank you might have to add octane booster to the gas if you leave it in there. It'll depend on how rough the car is running as to if you need to add it or not. -Scott H.
Hey Scott, what in the world is seafoam?? Is there more than one kind and if so, which one would I buy? Thanxs Again, Zip..
Seafoam is the brand name of a very good Fuel Treatment / Cleaner. As far as I know there is only one kind of Seafoam and it can be found at most auto parts stores on the fuel tratment isle. -Scott H.
