Its EGR crossover, aint it? My non-EGR intake doesn't have the port, my factory EGR intake does, and I'll go look (where the hell is my old intake? lol ) to check for the port going to the EGR plate. Heating the intake increases efficiency to a degree, but drops power. If it gets too hot, like in the south, power decreases enough that it costs you milage, vaporlock, etc.
I think Ken is referencing the GT40P heads noted in the picture in particular in this case. That hole is used for the EGR on these heads. The hole did exist as a crossover the way I understand it on some other heads, but it is serving the EGR in the case of these heads. Seth

my heater runs off the water hoses....the EGR crossover was on mine...and i got the new intakes gaskets that had the block off plug for the crossover...and i havent noticed anyhting different...i was thinking it might cool he motor down....but with my over heating probs i still dont know what if anyhting is helping...
The center exhaust port that is on the intake side has been on every Ford small block head since the 221 in 1962. It is and always has been used to direct heat to the bottom of the intake manifold plenum chamber - to keep the fuel in gaseous form until the engine is warm enough to heat the intake charge. In later V-8's this passage in the INTAKE was tapped for use with the EGR valve but it's primary function is still to warm the bottom of the intake plenum chamber to keep liquid fuel from collecting there. Easy with the EGO there Mr. Bluegrass, I think it's bruised. The hole is used for EGR on some engines, but it was there before EGR exisited, so it's a bit misleading to say that it's 'for' EGR. Most carb manifolds have the crossover, even without EGR. It's just for heating up the manifold. In fact for many applications for those P heads, this was not used as an EGR application at all. It came right off the manifold instead; this is because they used a exhaust pressure sensor (requires an orifice in-line) and there was no place to put it on the intake. Example So, all your certifications are great and I respect them but don't let them get in the way of you being able to be wrong every once in awhile... or if 'wrong' is too strong of a word then at least let yourself admit that your statements were misleading. I've been a Ford tech too, but I've been wrong many times to boot.
Like I said from the GT40P application this was not used for EGR, yet it was not plugged either. Guess what it was 'just' an exhaust crossover! Statements like your last one make me think I was too nice in my last post. My you are full of yourself, aren't you?:chillpill

I think Ray summed it all up.......... Nobody knows everything. Just relax, offer advice realizing there are people who need it but also that you could be wrong, or somebody might disagree with your advice/knowledge. Keep on mavericking and absolutley no ricing allowed here.
