How much does it cost for a custom grind cam? Would that be for a solid, Hyd, or roller? I use an off the shelf .292 Comp Cam.

A Jay Allen custom grind billet hyd. roller or mechanical is $399.00, flat tappets hyd. or mechanical are $299.00.

Ed Curtis is in the same area with his cams also

I imagine other cam companies fall in that range or a little cheaper

Ed Curtis is a great guy to deal with. He use to build alot of the fastest factory stock, pure stock and NMRA Real Street combinations around. Really knows his way around a Ford motor.

    Old post....

Anyway, I've dealt with one guy before. He's been mentioned previously in this [old] post. Typical. Can't talk to him on the phone. Email only. Total jerk. He'll not get a dime of my money EVER again. If that wasn't bad enough, there were also threats made on his part towards not just me but towards others as well. What a professional.

Have dealt with Ed. I kind of like him but the email-only thing just gets me. I totally understand running a one-man show (I have that experience) and phones just slow you down. However, the phone is a direct link to sales. I know first hand both sides of it so I am not knocking him. Just odd/different.

Have run Scott's cams. I still do. I have one or two...actually my brother's got one and the other's in the Maverick. Everyone said so-and-such's cam would have outpowered Scott's cam but I would rather pay Scott than have to waste my time with you know who. Besides, it's a bracket car. Every last hundredth isn't the end of the world. I'll trade a tenth for repeatability any day.

No matter though. Everyone has their own opinion on the matter-just like torque converters. One person might love them, others not so much. Point being-if you like what you're getting from your cam guy, stick with him.

Jay's stuff ends up around $450 or thereabouts after shipping insurance, shipping costs, etc. Not cheap but apparently they work. Last one I got from Scott was about $150 less. Can't remember the one I got from Ed...I guess I should look....just paid him for one though I haven't received it yet. I posted the same question on another board about a mild 5.0 and it was more-or-less unanimous that Ed was the go to guy with that particular deal. I'm excited about it but it'll be a long time before it's ever done.

    I'm with you.

Too many people kiss his azz @ SBF and apparently it has gotten to his head. Someone who is in a customer service type of bizz should learn some control. If you won’t say it to someone’s face you shouldn't say on the forums.

I'm also suspect of a persons character that called to straighten things out rather than do it on the boards in front of the others where they had just gave you a hard time. What are they afraid of?

Have to say that Ed is a good guy to deal with. And funny.

However...going on 3 months waiting for a camshaft is getting under my skin. I hope it's all it's cracked up to be. I like Ed but man, the wait is killing me! If I "needed" another one for a replacement, I'd just get in touch with Scott Main and have it in 2-3 days even if it does make 5 HP less.

And while on the subject...I'm pissed at AFR and Aerospace. AFR takes an order on a thursday night, it processes Friday and SHIPS a WEEK later. Not received a week later. It LEAVES their shop a week later and of course another week to get it to my door. Just a bag of keepers. I can understand waiting for the heads but keepers? Next time I'll get them locally! And Aerospace. 2 piston front calipers are sticking. Rebuilt them. Still sticking. PLASTIC pistons (or phenolic) have eaten into the bores. And of course now I have a fitting broken off in one of them but that's not their fault. But Apparently I'll have to buy new front calipers every 3-4 seasons @ $250 a set. If I didn't already have this setup on the car, I'd SCRAP them (or throw 'em through their front window) and go with Strange-or Lamb.

Crower has been a favorite for some time. Along with custom cams they also make some of the best custom cranks I have ever seen. They are not cheap but it beats buying the stuff so many companies are selling that are made in China and machined here.
