I just purchased a '60 Comet wagon and am having the same problem as Duster70. I read through this thread and just wanted to verify that the same applies to the Merc-o-matic(?) trans? Also, is this trans known as a C-2 ? Thanks.

Here is a report to support my reply #58.
I just had an 02 4r70w 4x4 trans performace built to heavy towing application by Level 10. The clutchs and band materials as well as matching friction plates are now a different material than OEM.
The trans original fluid was Mercon V. Now it is Dextron III to match the internal changes.

Delete comment. I didn't read all the way through.

Either Type F or Dexron/Mercon III will be fine.

If you have a C4, Type-F is correct.

If you have had different clutch materials installed or currently run any other fluid, then you are on your own from what is recommended.

    Will it hurt...
I have heard people swear both ways at this point. Before now (this thread), I have only met folks that said their trannys were fine until they used Dex. Therefore it can obviously hurt to use Dex, even though others have had no issues.
