That is the way my threaded nut is - have to add the washer to make up for the difference in wheel thickness - of course mine is the cheap orange HF grinder - I think I paid 14.00 for it a few years ago - bought that after I burned up 2 80.00 Makita's

U must have been leaning on them pretty hard to burn those up?

You make a good point -- never thought abt wear contributing to unbalance scenario.

No harder than the 14.00 Harbor Freight one - bearings shook loose in one of them and the other one just flat out seized up - I thought after the second Makita, I would try to find the cheapest one I could buy figuring that one would self destruct also - - cheapo is going on 5 years now

All 4 of our angle grinders are HF. We have 1 setup with a wire wheel, 1 with a wire cone, 1 with a cut-off disc and 1 with a regular grinding wheel.

I may have bought the cheapest yet. It was $3.99 with free shipping. I plugged it in and hit the switch. I watched it spin then began bellowing smoke.

I don't buy the kind with a switch that slides and locks any more. I like the lever type.. Porter Cable and Craftsman. They actually look identical.

I bought a used DeWalt probably 15 years ago, still works like new, and I've beat the crap out of it, much better than any other DeWalt tool I've ever had before.

My HF lasted all of 2 minutes before smoking itself.

I have a new Porter Cable I gave $29.99 for Tuesday (and it included 4 grinding wheels and 4 cutoff wheels). Also have a couple others we've had for years. Nothing under 7AMPS for me anymore. Anything less just won't live around my use.

One of my four original (early 90's) HF grinders went out a few months ago, the gears "lost contact". The output shaft had some play so I tried shimming it but it still stripped under load. Other than that everything internal looked great...
