Does anyone have a diagram of a 1970 steering column. Mine has the key on the dash. I am looking for a parts break down to determine what I need to repair it. I have found some from a 71 and later but looking for the 70 style. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John
Here are a few for the steering wheel and upper components: http://www.1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/exploded_views_interior.html A few more of the whole column: http://www.1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/exploded_views_suspension.html
Thanks for the diagram.....There is a little play up and down in the steering wheel....not sure if its a bearing, spacer etc...
I am having problems putting the column back together. The column itself is still in the car. I have three parts to put back together. I had removed the collar (the part that had the nub where the column shifter mounts) I shaved the nub and filled and painted it. The part above the collar the houses the turn signal switch is the second part. Finally the shaft that has the bearing just below the threads where the steering wheel bolts on. What keeps the shaft from coming out? Do you have a 70 column that you may be able to take some photos of? Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you John
How did you shave the nub ? I am going to the same thing to my 1970 as well some tips and pics would help me out alot
The other end of the shaft is attached to the steering box. The shaft is two pieces, but I am not sure how they separate.
The column shaft is two parts that one slides into other, often are sticky with hardened grease or may be rusty... You can try tapping on shaft with a hammer on a block of wood, but don't go crazy as it should not require major force...
He is having the opposite problem. With everything bolted together he can just pull up on the steering wheel and a whole shaft comes up. Nothing is retaining the shaft.
John Holden is correct. I can pull the inner shaft with the bearing pressed on right out right out of the outer. Below is the image that Rthomas771 sent, thank you for this!! In the image below #3524 "shaft" slides into 7212. What exactly keeps that from coming out. When I slide 7228 collar down and place 3511 over 7228 nothing is keeping the entire assembly from sliding back up as a unit. So if I were to install the steering wheel and pull up I would have all items attached and pulled from column. What am I missing guys.
Oops still b4 noon hadn't woke up yet... The three screws securing the signal light assembly(13341) also holds the shaft into the column...
