the three screws will hold the t/s assembly to the housing the plastic mounts to but they will not keep the entire thing bolted in. After staring at this diagram I believe #35879-4 the small bolt may hold the bottom or the shaft which may keep it from coming out of the tube. I will know more when I get home this evening. Let you know for sure....
Well they are supposed to, I just pulled the shaft out of one that AFAIK has never been apart, slides right out without the signal switch in place... There is a metal back plate that part of signal assembly, may be missing??? Once screws are removed bearing and shaft pull right out... BTW this is a locking column but as AFAIK the non lock are same...
This is the shafting the column. I am sliding the collar on first then the the shaft then the part the turn signal bolts to then the turn sig assembly.
That column is apparently different from the exploded view, it shows the bearing(3517) & sleeve(3518) in upper portion like the locking versions... EDIT I looked at the 68-69 Ford, Fairlane & Mustang columns, all are like the illustration, you're apparently assembling it wrong... Shaft with bearing goes in after the collar and upper is assembled, or is assembled with shaft but no bearing... Bearing must be on top side...
Thank you very much for the follow up. At work again, will try that when I get home. You are in Chesapeake right? We will have to get up when I get this on the road.
We can do that, I almost trust mine to go as far as Moyock... You have a really great looking Mav, planning on taking it to any shows next year???
Thanks for the help pics and suggestions guys but you can fix polish and I am polish through and through. Just ask John Holden up in NJ whom I grew up with and consider one of my closest friends. There are two bolts that kind of resemble connecting rod bolts that go through metal collar that the turn signal assy bolts to. The heads of these bots are designed to grab the slots on the outer part of the column that is stationary. With these properly in place you can not pull the assembly out. Kraft Comet is correct the shaft slides in and makes contact with a second shaft deep inside the column. The metal collar that the turn signal assy is bolted to go on after the rod and bearing this keeps the rod and bearing in place. Thanks to all that responded and hail to POLAND!!!! John Kowalski
