I have a 72 that I converted an inline 6 to a 302 with a c4. I have stock manifolds on it and want to upgrade to a nice set of headers. Forgive me as im sure this has been discussed What make and model headers work best and won't bake my starter. Thanks.

I've found the Headman long tubes to have the best fit.

x 2 on the Hedmans. Install them with a quality copper or aluminum gasket and you can toss those old manifolds in the scrap bin. With this type of gasket, they will never leak. They will never rub, and unless you're into "Dukes Of Hazzard" style of driving, you will never bottom out the car and hit the headers.

It has....over and over and over again. A search will give you lots and lots of answers....as will also be seen in this thread.

I have used Hedman shortys. I am currently using Doug Thorley shortys.

If you plan on using a set of high flowing aftermarket aluminum heads in the future, you also might want to consider the port size on the header flanges when purchasing headers. Some designs cannot accommodate port dimensions much larger than stock.

Never heard of INDY making any Ford heads.. they're Mopar specific.

And Frank's screen name is 71Gold.. give him a shout about the cross member.

Unfortunately not all headers fit each car the same. Some guys say they like hooker 6901s and have no fitment issues, while others can't wait to get rid of them because of the nightmares and ground clearance issues they've caused. From all that I've read around here the Hedman long tubes and Hedman shorties have been the least problematic for most. There are others as well but that particular model sticks in memory. Keep in mind that you'll give up some torque with shorter primaries.. but life is all about balance and some car guys aren't power mongers that worry about 6-10 ft/lbs of torque. YMMV.

I just removed a set of Hooker 6901's off my car. Found no make 'em fit dents or dings. Just a little speed bump rash on the bottom of one of them. Going to sell those because I have a new set of ceramic coated 6901's awaiting install.
