Agree. Unless someone had an originality or other requirement, most people would want a roller block.

I'm looking for a '70's block because Nevada says smog is based upon the year of the block not the car. I have not yet tried to see if my red Maverick with an '89 block will make it past the inspector. I'm hoping they are not that bright. I want to avoid this potential issue with the current project.

Take a small die grinder and make the 8 on your 1989 block look like a 6 most of the inspectors would never know the difference ! Unless you got a real ford guy that knows the difference in the way the New blocks are cast compared to the old ones.

Good idea, but I need a '71 and earlier block to avoid EGR. The '89 motor is already in the car. No getting a grinder to it now. I found out about this too late. If I did not convert to EFI, I doubt they would look twice. I want the early block for my other project.

The issue with the 5.0 motor is the dipstick. The hole is cast into the block. If you know where to look, it is easy to tell.

Correct as all '68 289 were built in 302 blocks, also applies to a few late '67 289...

Around 1979/80 the boss was eliminated for manual clutch linkage stud... Of course the '85-up blocks are cast for roller cams, though not all the early ones were fully machined... Also roller blocks are roughly 10-12Lb lighter than the early blocks... Since the roller blocks have taller lifter bores, one would tend to think they lost around 15Lb out of the bottom end...

Driver side has some cylinder gouges that can't be bored out, sooo if any one has a good left side half I'll :rofl2:

Just a pict D/L several years back... Makes for interesting viewing...

One of the local SCCA guys split a Ford Racing Sportsman block in the valley, didn't break in half but lost all it's oil pressure... Of course he likes to spin them 7500+, I believe he's using a aftermarket block now...

I've read that, too, but myself and others have measured 289 and 302 blocks side-by-side and the cylinders were the same length in each. My 289 was a '66.

So the stamping behind the manifold should be
8T(last six of my VIN) for a numbers match for the 1968 Shelby 350? Correct?

Also we’re all blocks stamped T , J code engines?
Do you know where I could buy an early 1968 J code engine if that’s the best I can do?
