5 lug and disc conversion

    I put 1996-2002 Crown Vic rear discs on my Maverick 5-lug housing.

    Only by the difference in thickness between the drums and the rotors at the hub. Same axles and housing as stock Maverick. The stock Maverick wheel studs are pretty short, so almost every swap thread includes swapping to Crown Vic studs which also have a slightly larger bore to match rotor holes.

    Thank You. Nothing really ground breaking here. I followed the Tech Article on this site and supplemented/cross-referenced it with some other similar threads on The H.A.M.B., etc.

    I used the 96-02 caliper brackets/backing plate. I was lucky enough to find NOS units. The brackets are the same part number for each side, but I flipped my passenger side to place the caliper behind the axle. I just have to remove my caliper and flip it upright to bleed the brakes. I also clocked the backing plates using an old gutted bearing to center it on the axle tube and drilled new mounting holes. I had to do this in order to get the bottom caliper bolts ABOVE the leaf springs. Again, not hard to do if you have a drill and some patience.

    The only non-stock part you need is some small spacers made up to take-up the difference in thickness between the stock drum backing plate and the thicker caliper bracket/plate. This keeps the axle bearing from wanting to move in and out of the axle tube bore. I had a friend of mine make mine out of brass. They go between the retainer plate and the bearing, so you'll have to decide to make them one-piece and press bearings off to install, or go with one that is slotted, or a 2-piece deal.

    The member who wrote the Tech Article here sells the spacer kit for this swap if you don't have the access or know-how or want to do the measuring and fab, but I just took the measurements to my buddy and he made the spacers. I do not recall what the dimensions were. The Maverick wheel bearing fits snugly in the bore hole of the Crown Vic backing plate, so all is kept well centered.

    Don't know much about rears. I went CSRP disc conversion on the fronts and I'm happy with it.

    Wow nice stuff up there I've been busy forgot to check the thread. Checked with my friends in matador TX. The mustang II was gone. There is a maverick still there. Im getting some interior pieces off of. And Im keeping the inline six. I'd like 5 lug disc in front. But Im fine with a rear end with drums. Id much whether just swap complete rear ends and not mess with axles but needs must and all.

    If you swap from drum to disc in the front and or rear you need a different master cylinder and proportioning valve. You can get all that off donor vehicle

    That's why I love a good parts car, that is exactly what I did. I didn't just swap to 5 lug and discs up front, I also upgraded to power brakes and the 5 lug, 8" rear end I swapped to also had bigger shoes and drums than my old one.

    If you swap from manual to power brakes, you need to swap the pedal assembly and driver's shock tower brace to fit the booster.

    Yea that is pretty much what l did years ago when l switched mine over to 5 lug disc in the front and 5 lug drum in the back. I went with a manual master cylinder
