Has anyone done the Taurus fan upgrade, and has their battery mounted in the trunk? Just trying to get my non electrical brain wrapped around the wiring before beginning. In the future, I would like to relocate the battery and starter solenoid to the trunk.

Thanks Frank. Is your solenoid in the trunk as well, or still upfront?

My Taurus fan swap was done with the battery in the trunk but connected to the solenoid in it's stock location up front.

Why do you want to move the solenoid to the trunk? The charge wire from the alternator and the two small solenoid wires would have to run all the way to the back.

Yes you are correct. However, by relocating the battery, a charge/positive cable must go to the trunk anyway. I was planning to connect the charge cable from the 3g alternator down to the mini starter, from the mini starter to a bulk head connector, from the bulk head connector to the hot side of the solenoid in the trunk.

Awesome build out Micah, makes me want to puke, set my car on fire, and then buy a Smart Car. Although this will never be as nice as yours, that is almost exactly what I had in mind, as far as the battery relocation goes, including the bulk head connector.

    Jason,
    Thanks.

I kept the solenoid up front. I agree with others, there is no need to put it in the trunk. You are adding a lot of wire and, unless you add circuit protection, you run the risk of a short. You might get that fire.

Just make sure you get a good quality 00 welding cable and put circuit protection as close to the battery as possible. Making your own cable ends are pretty easy.

The charge cable has to connect to the hot side of the solenoid, the starter connects to the switched side. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you?

    McDaniel,
Good point. As Thompson has described it, his alternator will be powering the starter all the time.

The top image is basically the factory setup. The bottom is the mini starter with it's own solenoid. It has a terminal that is always hot. So the battery, starter and alt. cable all basically connect to the hot side of the solenoid. Although after seeing Micah's setup, I agree that moving the solenoid is more trouble than necessary. Yay, less work for me!

Ok, that makes sense if your min-starter has a solenoid on it, but then the question is, why do you want a solenoid in the trunk?

I have a mini starter too and a relocated solenoid in the engine compartment because of my EFI. I just don't see the advantage of the solenoid in the trunk and the associated extra wiring. I believe in KISS.

    Maybe I'm missing something.
