i have a 1971 Mercury Comet 302 , it was originally a Power steering car, but i took out the power steering pump, and power cylinder and installed a power steering delete adapter , Its the orginally steering gear box to the car and done the adjustment to the steering box ,to try to get the slack out, and i have good tight suspension , i am in the market to pull out the steering box , and send it off to get rebuilt or get a new one , i was wondering the steering ratio number to a power steering car gear box , should i stick to that ratio , or go with a non-power steering ratio for the steering gear box. If u can give me a name of a company that rebuilds or sells new steering gear box ,is what i am looking for ,!! thanks

If I were going non-power, I wud get a non-power box. Steering will be a bear when parking w/ the pwr box w/o the pump and associated parts. If you can live w/ that -- than ur in bussiness. IIRC the pw ratio is 16: to 1.

    how does it drive now?
I did the p/s delete and kept the p/s box, didn't have a problem driving it. I now have manual rack n pinion.

Box is same as used on '68-'71 intermediates(Fairlane, Torino, Cyclone etc) and same year Falcons through '70... Also '75-'80 Granada used the same box... Mustang is different...

i drives ok, pretty good, i have all stock suspenssion ,but it all tight, i just notice if i go left to right in the steering wheel ,u can feel the slop, so i figured if suspension is good ,maybe time to have new or rebuilt steering box, since it,s the 71 original
