I have a 1996 explorer motor in my car currently and next week I will be swapping the water pump and figured this would be a good time to add an eccentric that I forgot to add originally. Any one know if this would be the correct one for the motor? http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBF-FORD-28...1531&clkid=3869048160601215668&_qi=RTM2247625 Thanks!
That should be the correct one. It can be done in the car with no issues you will need a new oil pan gasket for the front of the oil pan were the timing chain covers meets the pan. You will have to pull the harmonic balancer and that will probably be the hardest part. I am assuming you are putting on a different timing chain cover as well. Make sure you loctite the bolt in and hope that you do not break any water pump bolts. I like to use some permatex blue on one side of the gaskets and let them sit a little while so the bond and dont slip around
The engine has already been set up correctly for a maverick, so it has the correct timing chain cover. I am also using a one piece oil pan gasket from felpro so I shouldn't have to replace it? Hopefully the harmonic balancer shouldn't be too hard to take off in the car.
Sounds like you have it under control then, the one piece gasket solves that problem. With a puller the balancers come off pretty easily.
Which one fits depends on the timing gear, the eccentrics won't fit the later gears that didn't have one... Seems especially true for the two piece... The two piece are OK but I'm a fan of the earlier hardened steel eccentrics, pulled a '68 289 apart to get one for my Comet engine...
Lemme talk with my 289/302/5.0 guru, I recently gave him a 289 one piece steel eccentric that I found in a washtub half full of small block parts... He used it in a 5.0 Sploder engine, he'd just rebuilt... That engine is running great and I believe it has early timing cover as it went into a '72 Bronco... It has same V belt setup that's on my Comet... The two piece eccentric would not work with the gear set in my Stang engine(dunno what it is as I bought engine as fresh rebuild from a guy who sold his car)... What I can't remember is did it work with the one piece or did I buy a new chain?? Damn, too many trips around the sun...
Please let know know! That will be great to find out. I might actually have access to a 289 block that I can steal pieces from.
The 2-piece eccentric will work with the later cam sprocket with the raised center. I too prefer the 1-piece eccentrics. I've put 1-piece eccentrics on later cam sprockets by milling .100" of the front of the sprocket to flatten it out and keep the eccentric from hitting the timing cover.
Hopefully it fits! I decided to go ahead and buy it. It will be going on a stock explorer motor. I would much rather have a mechanical pump!
The one and two piece eccentrics are different and so are the cam gear and gear alignment pin. A one piece has a longer alignment pin that penetrates the eccentric to prevent it from slipping. The pin should sit flush or slightly below the eccentric face. The two piece has a shorter alignment pin on the cam to allow a tab on the eccentric to fit into the alignment pin hole and prevent it from slipping. The pin sits below the cam gear alignment hole to allow space for the eccentric tab. Most later 5.0 engines I have seen are set up for two piece eccentrics. You will not know for sure until you tear it down, so you may want to have both on hand and return the unused one. If using a two piece, the outer ring/cup of the eccentric should spin freely when installed.
Thank you! That is some great information. I actually got into contact with the maker of the link posted above and the kit does come with the correct dowel pin. So it should work fine for my engine. Can't wait to get this in place and my new water pump!
You're missing the hardened washer on the one piece eccentric , that's going to make it possible for the cam pin to walk out.
