Got into an argument at the body shop today. The last item on the list is a windshield installation. I gave him all of the trim clips that I took off when I removed the windshield (at least I think I did). I do not recall there being a spring clip on ever single post. On the bottom there were three steel standoffs (roughly 3 inches long) but can only guess at what post they were on. All were yellow and looked original. The windshield guru my body shop uses claims that the spring clips that go on the bottom post were different (wider). He refused to install the windshield because I did not have enough clips and had the wrong spring clips on the bottom. Can someone tell me for certain how many clips I need and what size for the front (and for that matter the back window as well). I have another question but will put it in an other post. Bail me out again guys!
You can use the same clips all the way around. Most I have disassembled is this way. Make sure you have the windshield "stands" that the rubber sits on at the bottom.
Thanks Craig, On the cars you have taken apart do you find that there is a clip on every stud? As for stands I have three. Is that enough? I might need to find a few more but need to do a count when I go to the body shop tomorrow. The clips on the back windshield are black (fronts are yellow). Is that typical on a 1973?
I usually find 4 stands as well. 90% of the time I find yellow clips front and back. On the bottom...some of those studs are used to align the stands....no clips on those.
Ok, I tried to replace my front windshield on my 73 and I had yellow clips, black clips and yes I had some tipe of leveling strips of metal about 2 or 3 " long on the bottom. Will it didn't take long before I had all those little parts mixed up and lost. I got the glass out, in two parts. Then I call Safe Light thay came the next day. First the guy said you don't need the leveling strips and he had a box of the clips. When you got the glass out you seen all the black sticky stuff that was between the glass and metal, he cleaned all that off. He put this rubber around the glass and then this rubber also fits into the metal and protects the clips. With in a little over an hour it was all done. Total cost was $300. I hope this helped a little. He did say he wish people would not try and take the glass out themselves thinking they can save money on the installation job. They know there job and can do it so much faster, and the price will be the same.
did they furnish the ...glass, rubber and clips? "Safe Light" told me "they don't install glass in anything older than 1974."...
Yes thay came with the glass, rubber, and clips. And they do work on all ages of car's and trucks at lest they do in Missoula MT. I live in a town that is 50 miles from Missoula and they came. I think you have been given a runaround. Try another outlet in another town and if they give you any guff about only doing newer cars ask them why montana can do it all. Then find out the number to the main office it may be along way from you, and call them up tell them what they are doing to you. My window even came tinted at no cost. Even after he put all the chrome back on he put in the bracket that hold the rear view mirror. I'm Sorry you are having so much trubel. I could be wrong but I think the glass is the same in all the Mavericks 73,74, and on. The rubber is the key. Remember that black goo that you had to try and remove ! Will he did not put that stuff back in, there was no need to. The rubber was the replacement. So the guy you spoke to May not have noun how to put that rubber in. He did not want the job.
All windshields from 70-77 and 2 or 4 door, fit the same. The '70 model year had a slightly thicker glass for some reason. Again - it's a Ford thing .............
After he installed the glass he told me to roll up all the windows and let the car set in the sun all day. I remember it was something in the 70 or 80 degrees. He said the heat would help relieve any stress that there might be some place in the rubber. After he had left and the temperature had come down I got inside the car and a friend used my water hose on full and there was not one drop of water come inside. He had told me he would come back if there was any
I got the maverick back from the body shop (again). The body shop hired a guy to put in the front and back windshield but he was not willing to put the trim back on. When I took the windshield out I had all yellow clips. He said some of the original yellow clips were not worth putting back. He installed the original yellow clips on the sides and the trim snapped right on without issue. The clips on the bottom of the windshield are replacements. They are black and look shorter than the yellow ones. I tried for a long time to snap on the bottom trim. It wasn't going to happen so I quit, shut down my shop and opened a bottle of Pinot Noir. What the hell gives? I think I need a different clip. Where can I get yellow clips that work? New or used. These little things are making me crazy! I just want to get this car on the road!!!!
I had the same issue, I got the black clips they were hard to get on, had to tap them on the pin. Was to tight so I just bent them a little to take some pressure off and then the mouldings just snapped back on , have to be patient and take your time and don't force it . I marked where every clip was so I knew where to push, that helped, I also put the clips on before I put the glass in. All the clips were the same.
I haven't physically remove the windshield, waiting on some help. All the trim is off and the gasket is cut back. Would you explain what the "stand" is and it's purpose. Would like to know before I remove the glass. Second question, color coded clips is for the thickness of the clip? Thanks in advance
