Hey Guys So after rebuilding the control valve and slave cylinder (or what ever it is called) now my Power Steering pump is starting to give, I changed the belt as it was slipping and it helped for about a week haha. Now I can def hear the pump struggling. Should I try a rebuild or replace it? Is it "easy" or does it require specific equipment and measurement tools? Thanks
When these pumps get worn/old they moan(it's a rotary, vane type pump)... If it isn't leaking there isn't much one can do at home, I've had the one apart now on my Fairlane and other than a couple O rings and gaskets that's all the rebuild kits include.. There are no instructions in the shop manuals to actually replace any internal parts, but a no pressure condition could be caused by blown internal O ring or gasket..
I had my Ford "Thompson" pump rebuilt about 6 yrs ago; it work fine but could never stop it from whining. I finally wound up going to completely different setup.
You'll have to remove pulley from original pump but usually a bolt & nut kit that works well enough is included... Also may have to swap your orig reservoir(can) as you may just get pump internals... There are videos on youtube that show how to remove/install can... When I mentioned swapping the reservoir on one of mine, I'd gotten a bunch of gloom & doom from my local "expert" but in reality it's fairly easy... Here's the videos I reccomend, shows how to disassemble the pump... No it's not a Maverick but a Ford pump is a Ford pump... https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=autorestomod+power+steering+rebuild
