So the signals in the front of the car, the back ones are the only ones that are out. Would it be the wiring in the trunk?

To be sure about the wiring a visual inspection would be advisable but I would find out what went on under the steering wheel first. The brake light wiring runs from the dash area behind the drivers side kick panel into the area under the sill plate and then behind the rear seat plastic and into the trunk area. Has the car had this condition every since you owned it ?

When I first started to drive it nothing was was working. It had been sitting in the desert sun for 2 years so everything was ruined. We had fixed it, but now it has issues again.

If signals in front are working there is a problem at the signal switch or in the wiring... If brake lights work without signal on then it just about has to be a signal switch problem...

The brake lights don't work either so what would it be?

    Agreed...

Here is wiring diagram for signal switch... need to check for power at signal connector near/at steering column(blinking signal activated, steady with brake applied) lt green/orange & orange/lt blue wires... Those are feeds to R & L rear lamps...

I really hate to do this because it sounds like a jerk move but....have you checked the bulbs? It's such a Mr. Obvious it's usually overlooked. Kind of like the issues I had with my motorcycle two years ago, chased gremlins for months to find the positive terminal was loose! Should have been the first thing I checked but no, I had to ignore it.:banghead:

Yes I did check all the bulbs, that was the first thing my dad and I had thought to check.

I see the diagram, but I do not get what it reads. Where should I start reading it?

The ground wires for these old mavericks are usually attached the body or frame using a round crimp-on connector and a machine screw----over time, corrosion forms between the metal parts which causes the ground to loose connectivity---I have found it best to locate the ground points(usually somewhere close to the source)--remove the screw --- do a good job of removing the corrosion from the connector, screw & point of connection---then reassemble the ground point---start at the back of the car and work forward-------the ground points under the dash will be the most challenging(helps to remove the front seat when working under the dash)------------Just my two cents worth---good luck
