Hello guys Simon here. I am getting my 74 maverick ready for driving and I just replaced the Edelbrock 500 cfm carb that seized last year with a direct replacement. Though this year I want to hook it up right. Just testing the new motor a little over a year ago I clamped the kick down rod to the throttle rod. Now I want it on there right. What kit/parts do I need to get the kick down rod on there correctly? its a 1403 500 CFM carb . its a 302 with a C4 obviously. Thanks for any help.
I have but they weren't real specific. Jegs high performance claims they have one for Mavericks and Edelbrock carbs, but I'm leery. How many high performance shops have Maverick specific bolt On's like this....
Kick down rods were engine/transmission specific, meaning Maverick, Mustang, Fairlane etc 302/C4 all used same rod... I dunno what it takes to adapt the linkage to a E'brock as that type carb was never factory... Holley street carbs have factory lever hookup, but still need a extension as the front throttle plates on a 4bbl set farther forward than the 2bbl...
You just need a Ford kick down lever for the appropriate Edelbrock carb, they are not specific to the Maverick. You may or may not also need a kick down rod extension. If so you can get one from Holley as they attach to the rod.
Thanks for the info. I ordered a kit from Jegs. if I need the extension I just call Holley and tell them what I have and get it from them right?
Common problem and most of eddy stuff is made for later model cable operated stuff like the aod and such. The parts you're likely ordering will still need to be modded. And probably easier to just get some 1/2" steel tubing and create your own custom length kickdown rod. Bend em' to fit.. smash the ends flat.. locate/drill the hole and round the ends, paint em' up and call it done. Edit: just looked and appears to be part #8011 for the kickdown lever kit. PS.. memory may be off here but I think you can chop the holley kickdown stuff up to make it work on the eddy. The thing to remember is you need to stage the kickdown to move completely seperate of the throttle movement, like the autolites and holleys which iirc have an adjustment screw, because the kickdown rod should only be moved once the throttle has moved a substantial distance. Basically, should not move at all until heavier throttle angles are used and then the kickdown rod finally moves enough to raise line pressure. In situations where slower heavy throttle transitions take place, rolling slow but heavy into the throttle, and the modulator is still receiving sufficient manifold vacuum the kickdown overrides it to raise line pressure and force the downshift. Keeps the modulator from allowing engine lugging in high gears.
I just got the part #8011 in today. Not much to it really. it's and extension and a nut and bolt with washers. no real way to attach it to the kick down rod unless I use a nut and bolt through the rod and the extension plate. Is that how it is supposed to attach? if so pretty shoddy "kit".
That is just the rod extension, what you need is the Ford kick down lever kit that attaches to the throttle linkage on the carb.
Looks like part #1483 but I have to wonder if all the eddy carbs take that same linkage? Might be a good time to call the manufacturer directly to make sure.
You could start with Edelbrock. They may have different ones depending on the carb, or they may all be the same. I don't know for sure as I have never had an Edelbrock or Carter.
