72 comet, no airconditioning, no rear defogger are there differences in the heater controls as far as illumination is concerned? i have a control bracket with only one bulb and a NOS control panel which looks like the "FAN" can be illuminated, too. it won't fit the bracket, and my old panel plate looks different... will try to get pictures later, but maybe someone can chime in to tell me which is the right heater control for my plate!
All heater bezles will fit all heater controls. The difference is whether the word FAN is illuminated or not.
took some pictures and dug trough the ford master parts catalog. my car was built 11/71 and the change in heater controls was 7/15/72: heater without rear defogger, control unit: early: D0DZ 18531-A late: D2DZ 18531-A corresponding heater bezel has even more differences, part numbers are for black: before 12/20/71: D0DZ 18A651-E 12/20/71 - 7/15/72: D2DZ 18A651-E after 7/15/72: D2DZ 18A651-Y thus, my car has the early bezel and control which look like this, fan written on top: my NOS bezel is the late one, D2DZ 18A651-Y: the hole in my controls is from the ugly screw through the bezel. it's also in the wrong location for the fifth push pin on the late bezel. plus i doubt i can get the late bezel to sit flush on the controls, as there's the blue lens which would keep it raised. one option would be to butcher up the heater controls. what i would prefer would be a late control panel. anyone have a picture so i can compare - and a spare i can buy?
ok, here's a 73 control unit on ebay, i guess that's what it should look like: comes with cables, so the price and also shipping is rather steep. so does anyone have the 72 unit D2DZ 18531-A for sale?
Acornridgeman has a thread on here that shows the back of the heater belzels. You can see the "pins" on the heater bezel. These pins seem to always snap off upon removal.
Here is a post with pics I did on this awhile back ... Heater panel differences between with and w/out defogger Well I finally got around to moving the switch from my NOS rear defogger from the center of the dash into the heater panel for a factory look. I moved the harness from the center to behind the heater panel and bolted in the NOS switch I got from Green Sales. After getting it all bolted up nice and tight I discovered that one of the pins located on the back of the panel was in a different spot from the original. The pin did not line up with the hole where the original pin went in. Since this was a hard to find NOS panel still in the box I did not want to just brake off the pin. I figured out where the new pin would wind up and simply drilled a new hole. As you can see in the pictures. The old pin was higher and off to the left slightly. The new pin was lower and more to the right. You can see in the pics the different pin locations. Just a heads up for anyone else doing this changeover. Nothing ever seems to go as planned with this car ! LOL Attached Thumbnails __________________
Correct, the fan lens fits inside the square recess shown in the photo I posted. Thanks sgaugeguy for helping me to explain this, perhaps we've cleared up alot of questions and concerns regarding the heater control and bezel differences.
