I am currently installing a 302 in my 1970 mav. I am using the 3 speed top loader and need to move the shifter to the floor. I bought a Hurst Indy 3 speed shifter because that's what Auto Krafters and Summit said would fit or that's what they sell for a mav. The shifter is straight and looks like it will stick out right on the edge of the tunnel and it looks like I will have to cut out the tunnel stiffener so the mounting bracket will allow the trans to go high enough to get the cross member in. Has anyone installed one of these shifters or have any advise?? thx
If your car came with "three on the tree" then, yes you will have to cut a hole for the shifter. Do you have the shifter and the installation kit ?
You shouldn't have to cut the support, the shifter should mount near the end of the tail shaft housing.
Maybe the Mastershift would have been a better choice, they have one listed for the Ford three speed. It would be more like an original shifter installation. https://www.holley.com/products/dri...al_shifters/mastershift_3-speed/parts/3663179 https://www.holley.com/products/dri...ories/shifter_installation_kits/parts/3677640
Depends on the tail housing. Some of the three speeds lack mounting holes for a shifter. The install kit he'd need in this case would have a steel bracket to bolt to the tail housing to main case bolts.
Or swap the tail housing for one that has the shifter bosses and holes. I'm thinkin the 4 speed tails are interchangeable here, one more possibility.
The indy shifter has all the mounting brackets that bolt threw were the tail shaft bolts to the tranny. It sticks out about 3/4" from the side of the gearbox. I can Trim the mounting brackets to make the trans fit the tunnel. My concern is that it is a Strait stick and will have to come up threw the side of the tunnel if I leave it as is. Which will look Dumb as hell. When the shifter is bolted to the bracket it is inline with the linkage plates on the gear case. I could cut the shift lever and put a off set in it so it doesn't go straight up off the side of the Tail shaft. I would have to go about 2.5" over to get all of the boot to be on the flat top of the tunnel. I just thought someone may have installed this shifter and ran into the same problem. I should have asked on here before I bought it. Its kind of a POS shifter also, no bushings or anything just steel on steel and clips not even thin washers to go behind them.
Why not return it and buy the better piece? Does your tail housing have bolt holes at the back by the driveline? If it does that's the way I would go.
When I had my 3sp. I had the Hurst mastershift with maverick specific linkage and it worked with both the 6 cylinder and V8 crossmember. I had already butchered the trans tunnel putting in a universal shifter so, I can't tell you haw bad your cut will be.
My Tail shaft housing does not have the bolt holes in the back. I think im going to have the same problem with any shifter with out having the bolt holes in the back of the tail shaft. I'm going to modify the shifter to hit the center of the tunnel.
If you're going to drive it a lot, I would hunt for a tailhousing with the shifter bosses and then use a normal Hurst shifter.
I would have to agree, it would get the shifter where it needs to be and is a much better shifter. Swapping the tail housing on a three speed is pretty simple, probably easier than fitting that Indy shifter would be!
