In trying to buy this 71 Comet GT, and yes it is a GT, I have found more worms in this can then ever before. It is a long story.
But here's the questions for everyone,
    1. Is your vehicle's title in YOUR name? Not your parents, haven't got around to it, got a bill of sale, etc, etc etc. In your name?
    2. When you did retitle it, IN YOUR NAME, what issues/problems did you have doing it?
Every state, that I know of now, issues a title for vehicles that are licensed to be on the roads. and yes there's probably some states that still don't ever now.
But if it is "your car" why wouldn't you want the title in your name?

I purchased my Comet 2 years ago from my good friend and I just haven’t got the title from him. I’m not worried one bit about it, I could walk into his house today and walk out with the title in hand.

Usually title in parents name is for insurance reasons. If they are principal driver(s), then adding Jr as an occasional driver costs less, especially if he's under 25. Last vehicle in my parents name was a '64 Ford. This was 1968. I'd made a deal for it but was working over 1000 miles from home. Dad picked it up, titled and had it ready to go when I flew in to get it. We retitled it in my name approx a year later.

My daughter's 1st/2nd cars were jointly titled with their mother. Older daughters 2nd car had a lean that required vehicle be in her mothers name(worked for the bank). Younger daughter's 2nd was in her name(I gave her both 1 & 2. ), by that time she'd joined Air Force.

In a case of older parents, usually child has power of attorney. Should be able to apply for duplicate title or sell it to whomever they like.

Not so in every state. Some it would go to an "estate". You'd be surprised at the paperwork these days. You may have to come up with death cert, birth cert, etc, etc. I bought a Mav 20 years ago in Wash St. fortunately the grandfather signed the title several years before he died so his son could have it. That made it so anyone could title it.

If it's not in your name, it's not yours and he could come get it anytime he wants to. You just never know. why take the chance.

Doubt that very much. Check with your state and it might be "enlighting". And scary. POA can be general or very specific. Depends how old the POA is, what was bought and sold before and after it, etc.

How many of you have bought a vehicle/trailer etc that has a title and never re-titled it in your name, even after it was paid off? This can be a problem when you go to sell it. Wife and I bought a new 20' trailer trailer from a place in Medford, Or. 18 months ago. Paid it off in 12 months. Called the finance place to get the title and they couldn't find it. They had to give us a form letter, stating, they no longer had a lien or interest in it and that it was paid off.
Went down to DMV to re-title it and the clerk told me how they never applied for a title and legally it was always ours. So now we have a title for it, in our name only.
This Comet, Grandma has it, (physically on her property) BUT, her hubby (is dead) that it was "given" to about 12 years ago, and he never re-title it. The "titled" owner is dead and grandma can't find the "Bill of Sale" to prove it was given to her hubby. Now the titled dead owner's grandson lives there, (very small town) and they're not on the best of terms with him either. So I start trailing this car out, he calls the cops and reports it stolen, I have a BoS from someone that doesn't legally own the car.
Yeah, I could have a problem here. And since the state line is only a few miles away, now we have Interstate GTA felony. Out my money and in jail for GTA, and not the video game either.

I generally have no problems. Of course I buy em cheep, fix em, drive the wheels off em, put the wheels back on.. repeat a few more times & after its completely used up strip it down and drag it across the scale.

Ummm when we had to place mom in assisted living, my sister used her power of attorney to sell mom's house.

Anyway if you know so much about these things, why are you asking??????

    1. Yes.
    2. 1997. No problems, no issues.
Car was in my parents' name from 1981 to 1997. I started driving it in '84...

“Come get it” there’d be no need for that, it’s in his barn. Even if I had the title it wouldn’t be in my name.
I obviously trust this man that I’ve known for 35 years, sorry if this bothers you.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Not what I was asking, just looking to hear others stories about title issues and how they resolved them. It might help someone else avoid the same problems.

I like "hand me down" vehicles. You know the history and they stay in a good home. I have a 68 Cougar I'm redoing right now that was my ex's grandparents. We got it for $400 from one of the others grandkids. But only because they still had the original title and grandfather had signed it before he died. He has only 56K miles on it and since they never retitled it, I am the second owner on record.
