Got the Mav back from the paint shop. I was very fortunate to find someone local who does paint at a shop he built at his home and doesn't look to get rich doing it. Guy is a professional though. Single stage and original paint code color. It's not a show quality job and has a couple imperfections but turned out pretty nice. One mistake which counts for this is that I was sold cheap paint without knowing it and the shop I bought it at never gave me choices which they should have. Learning experience for me. With the astronomical pricing paint jobs are at now, I count my blessings that I was able to get a decent job on the cheap to make this presentable again as this is a shoestring resto on a tight budget. I did the minimal body work it needed as best as I could and I'm no pro. Gave it to him already in primer which saved me a bundle. Nice to have a close friend that owns a restoration shop and has people. If anyone has recently priced paint or a paint job, you know of what I speak. I learned much talking to the painter after it was done. Hundreds/gallon for cheap single stage. $2k/gallon for basecoat. Showroom quality paint job for $5k and up. Show quality paint jobs $20k. Anyway, she's pretty again and everything will be on by beginning of next week including the 5 slot wheels I scored at Spring Carlisle. Those are polished up and ready for mounting.
A new paint job changes the whole perspective of the car , now to get the shiny stuff back on it and hopefully a nice set of wheels and tires
Good to see you again Wes. I didn't realize THIS was you all along. Did not recognize the new forum name.
Obviously, I took your advice. The vintage American Racing wheels I scored at Spring Carlisle worked out well after being spaced due to the front calipers. I just picked up a new set of Mastercraft RWL tires which will be replacing the cheapies I mounted soon. At the Ford Nationals, I got a set of sport mirrors from a Mustang II which are being refinished now. I believe I will be painting them a green closer to the roof color to accent the car rather than the body color which most all of them end up being. Something different.
BTW Welcome back you took quite a leave of absence I have read several of your post from over the years so you took the right to remain silent literally
Thanks. I haven't had any car other than a Miata, which I still have, for a bunch of years so it seemed pointless to stay in any of the car forums. Didn't want to torture myself.
WOW! The car looks very nice from all angles. Congrats on getting her this far. I know it's a long and daunting process, not to mention expensive. Have fun with the car and thanks for sharing. Tom
Thank you guys. The compliments are really appreciated. The car is far from done. I still haven't fixed the paint flaws and the sport mirrors aren't quite finished being painted to be installed. There's a bit more but all will be resolved in time.
Nice paint job - I just had my ramp truck painted by the kids at a tech school and I look at it with a big smile now
