Hey guys, been enjoying my car for a while now, but I am ready to have a bigger tire. I want 315s or bigger. What have you guys done?
The usual fix for cars to use very wide rears is tubbing. I don't know if I ever saw a Mav with fenders extended. I know there have been just a few foreign makes that have had road course versions with extended fenders but they lent themselves to that kind of body mods. I don't see a Mav being one of them.
You could mini-tub the rear for wider wheels/tires or go whole hog like I did with my Maverick. I believe the mini-tub project was XP Snake's handi-work while mine was done by a shop because I didn't trust my welding capabilities. Bruce
I was thinking something along those lines. Might need to do both (tub and flare) to get a really big tire though. The tub guys I am assuming you moved your leaf springs inboard?
I believe XP Snake did. Do a search for XP Snake, I think pictures are still in the archives. He did an awesome job of widening the rear inner fenders without cutting the frame rails. My springs were replaced with a 4-link/coil over shock suspension. My rear tires are 29" tall by 18" wide Mickey Thompson radials. I cut the floor out from side-to-side and from just in front of the tail light panel to just behind where the stock seats were bolted. My fabricator came in with Strange Engineering frame rails that lined up with and connected to the front subframes. He built custom underfloor seat supports and other bracing. He then custom bent and installed a 6-point roll bar. Another fabricator made the sheet metal floor, sealing off the wheel tubs. Bruce
I’ve been thinking about fender flares for a while now. These would look amazing IMO. Also it’s important that I keep my back seat. https://www.umshop-store.com/product/fm-1-flares
Mojo, I've always wanted a Maverick that looked like it came off of a drag strip. With some minor changes this car could be raced but it won't be while my name is on the title. I love to just drive it. I took it to a car show with my friends that is 36 miles north of my house. With the TKO600 5-speed I was cruising about 60 mph at 1,900 rpm and that is with a 4.11:1 rear gear. The engine a Blueprint Engines crate 347 that is a torque monster. We used an Edelbrock dual quad intake that I've owned for years with a pair of 500 cfm Edelbrock carbs. This combination is so tractable that I've caught myself rolling through some turns in 2nd gear. It will never be finished 'cause there will always be something else to do to it. Thanks, Bruce
