I have read this thread and "Simple Man" you say that there is a fuel filter in the tank? If this is correct how do I go about locating it and replacing it? I have a 1970 maverick.
the filter on the sending unit in the tank has what is called" a sock". you will have to pull the sending unit to check or replace it.
Would you happen to know the best way/ location to setup a high micron fuel filter (100)? I will also have a 10 or so micron filter after the fuel pump leading to the carb. Can I just remove the sock if I have one there and install the fuel filter somewhere else and what would be the best location? Thanks
the sock is basically used to catch the frogs and lizards (rust scales) from stopping up the sending unit... I took the the sock off and slid a short piece of hose on the tube then put a small inline filter on the hose... I did the same to my intank fuel pump.......
Be careful if you end up taking the sending unit out. I took mine out with the intention of checking/replacing the sock but when I went to remove the sock from the tube the tube broke and I had to buy a new one. The original unit was plastic and brittle.
I've seen some rusted to a thin shell and break when trying to remove the sock (filter) but no plastic tubes. I know the filter gets brittle. https://www.ebay.com/i/222481824080?chn=ps&dispItem=1
I know this is an old old post but, My O ring is leaking so I need a new one. I do not have a sock at all now. Can I measure the external fuel line on the sending unit (the little elbow that comes out of the tank) to find out what size sock I need? Or do i need to pull the unit and measure where the sock goes.
if the O ring is leaking you will have to pull the sending unit to replace it. you then can do any repairs to the unit while it's out...JMO
