Hello all! For my first post on this forum, I am just wanting to ask for some recommendations on a good carburetor for my 250 i6.

    Thanks all!

Hi Greg ............ :Welcome: to the forum!

The 250's I've dealt with all had the Carter RBS not a YF. Either one serves the inline 6's very well IF they are set correctly.
When they get out of whack they can cause all sorts of problems. Do you have a picture of what's on there now? After all these years it is pretty common not to have the carb on a car that it came with originally.

Hello, thanks for the warm welcome.
I do have a picture of the tag accompanying the carb, if that'll help at all.

    Thanks.

Tag shows 1975 Maverick - looks like you have the original, which is nice.
YF series starting 75 for the 250's and it does look like what you have from what I can see in the picture.

So is it giving you trouble or you are wondering about a performance upgrade? If it is just getting tired, the Carters are pretty easy carbs to rebuild.

Yup, it's been giving me quite a lot of trouble. This is my first project, so everything's pretty new to me.

It started with it running rich with lots of backfire after a couple minutes of driving, then it suddenly went to an inoperable state while I was driving. Now it only fires up with engine starter fluid for about 5 seconds.

I'm thinking it's the float or a clog, though I'm not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing, so I'm also wondering if I'm on the right train of thought.

    Thanks.
    Greg

Lots of backfiring could indicate a possible ignition problem. Make sure the timing is correct. Check for good spark. Make sure all the plug wires and plugs are functioning properly and not damaged or shorting out.

Make sure the choke is working.
Due to the age, not a bad idea to freshen up the carb anyway. Kits are cheap.

Let us know what you find out.
So hard to diagnose anything from afar.

Speaking of, any recommendations for a rebuild kit for this specific type of carb? Thanks.

I've almost always used the Walker brand. Just about any good parts store will get it for you.
Also, there are a bunch of youtube videos on rebuilding the YF/YFA - I suggest watching them and then deciding if it is something you want to try. Cleaning the old carb is the biggest part of the job.

Here is O'Reilly for a 1975 Maverick - price may vary by location.
