The column in my car needs to be gone through as there are already obvious issues with it. I sent a request to Steering Column Services in California and unfortunately they do not service these cars. Anyone know of a place that does?
There is really nothing that goes wrong with the steering column in these cars. I have never heard of anyone having to rebuild theirs. What issues are you having?
Are you talking about the bearings going bad? Maybe a bushing? Either one of those issues can be fixed by just replacing those parts. Measure what you have and start searching.
There's several things going on and I was skeptical about attempting this, especially since most of my tools are in storage far from where I live. I have some here. But after hearing what it's going to cost I think I'm going to do my best.
Tony Augustine repairs Ford tilt columns 1967-73. He is in Missouri. Fixed columns are much simpler to work on. He probably would do the job. 6t8cougarguy@gmail.com
Unless the openings that secure the shift collar to jacket are busted out, not much to fix. T-bird & Lincolns excepted, majority of Fords in era are basically same. Mostly length varies.
I am looking for a new steering column or mine rebuilt to remove the column shifter, any suggestions/
I can't really tell you about removing the column shifter to convert to floor but it's been done on these cars but a new a thread will help you too.
I converted mine. As said before, there really is nothing to these columns except a couple plastic bearings. To get rid of the three on the tree shifter section, I just replaced it with one from a floor mount. They are hard to find but they are out there. I think you can use ones from other models but you need to research. I did not retain the wheel lock or any of the neutral safety switch assembly with my AOD conversion. Micah
I used the column collars from a 71-73 Mustang to convert over. They fit without modification and were easier to source than Maverick/Comet.
