Six Maniac needs help: ' not familiar with SBF variations: Removed the engine yesterday from the 'project' Ranchero / Maverick. Presumed a later 302/C4 although badging is 289. Found a spare C4 yoke was too small for plugging tranny output shaft for pull. Where are important numbers to ID Block, Heads, etc. BH and Tranny look larger than C4 - C6? whats capped at back of heads - EGR ? has points distrib... thanks . . . . PS left my hood open overnite in the Springtime hustle on the Maverick .
The caps at the back of the engine are likely for smog. I had a bar going across the back on mine when I pull the 302 out of my Grabber.
The transmission looks to be a C6. Yes that is EGR capped at the rear of the heads. The block casting number is on the passenger side down back where the starter would go, next to the oil pan. It will be something along the lines of D5TE or some such. The first letter D represents the decade, C=60's, D=70's, E=80's. The number indicates the year, D5 indicates 1975. The last 2 numbers help identify the engine application. TE would indicate truck or maybe van. The casting numbers do not change every year, they only change when the original casting is modified. The cylinder head casting numbers are on the bottom side of the head below the intake port. If you had the intake off you could probably see them with a mirror. The heads are most likely 70's era 302 smog heads. The short block may or may not be a 289. The only difference in a 289 and 302 is the crank and rods. You will have to get the casting number off the rods or crank to know, or you could remove a plug and insert something into the cylinder and measure the difference from TDC to BDC. A 302 is a 3 inch stroke and a 289 is 2.87 I believe. For the most part all SBF heads are garbage from the factory. The 69-70 351W heads are OK and the 80's era 5.0 3 bar and 4 bar heads are OK, commonly called GT40 and GT40P heads respectively.
The smog pump plumbs into the back of the heads if it is equipped with one. On carbed applications the egr draws from the intake through the exhaust crossover port.
thanks and side questions developing: ... are certain 302 blocks cast only for larger 164T FW and BH's , or can swap with 157T BH s ?. ( 'have some 157T BH's, Clutches, clutch linkage etc from small block six 250 projects with same as V8 and a Comet six with a C4 hoped as options). thanks - SBF E3ZR BH on 250 / T5 SBF C5DA BH/T5 Plate on 250
The numbers for the year of the block are cast into the block behind the starter. The year of the heads is cast into the top of the head... Edit: I guess that question was already answered.
thanks for attention removed the big C6 (?) tranny from the small block and ID'd Block.: D4DE-6015- BA found cyl head #'s : D8OE and BA Tranny is presumed C6 - Looking for tag or ID code. thanks
What Jason Thompson posted. Ford has now come along way with the development of SBF heads. So has after market.
D4 block is a low compression deal, the deck is something like .023" higher than blocks made before or after.
Yep. Found out about that many years ago when I was putting together a 347 using a D4 block. Pistons were .020" down in the holes. Ford Power Parts catalog confirmed the higher deck height.
The small block C6 were commonly(mostly) used behind 300 I6 & 302 in E & F series trucks. The 351 commonly used the C6. AFAIK all C6 used 31 spline output shafts. The boss on 302 for clutch linkage Z bar was eliminated around 1980. Someone kludged what they had in the Ranchero, no doubt originally used a 289(no 302 before '68). Probably swapped distributor as 289 would have used points.
