I ordered the Unisteer Rack and Pinion but the headers I've used don't work. I've ordered the Hooker 6901 (recommended by Unisteer) and Hedmen 88300 (someone on this forum had used before). The Hookers sit right on top of my steering and wouldn't be able to connect anything. The Hedmens are very tight against the Power Steering Valves. Has anyone else installed this on their car? Should I just try to change the fittings or alter the headers? Thanks I will add fitment of the Hedmens with this kit.
Does that fitting say China on it? If Unisteer recommended the 6901's i would contact them for answers to your questions.
I have the SS version of the Hooker 6901's on my car and the Unisteer kit. I had to dimple one of the tubes to clear the steering knuckle and the clinch bolt. No way would the kit have worked otherwise. The fluid fittings supplied in the kit will also barely clear the headers and knuckle.
Do you have any pictures of the fitment overall? Did you change out the fittings as well or does the header clear them with enough room? Also if you know what the header is called so i can search for it online. Thank you
Nick's car was used as the prototype for the installation and I believe the Unisteer instructions used his car for the pics. You can access the instructions on Unisteer's website in PDF format. They include pics. I tried getting some pics of mine, but had insufficent light to get acceptable resolution. Why I had interference issues at the steering knuckle and Nick's car didn't may be related to my block and heads. I run my block at zero deck height and also run AFR 165 heads that have been milled to reduce the chamber volume. These factors could have altered the header to steering knuckle clearance.
Do you know what the part number is or where you got the headers? The only other option I'm seeing are the competition style 6901s. I will add a picture of them. If they are the same kinds then I will order those and give them a shot.
I have the SS 6901's. The 304SS is nice in regards to corrosion resistance, but is a real challenge to dimple if a tube is contacting something on the chassis. You have to heat the area cherry red and even then, it doesn't dent easily. Will they fit properly with the unisteer system? Ask 5 people and you will get 5 distinctly different answers. I believe all are sincere. On my car, the steering knuckle contacted one of the tubes, requiring an "adjustment" to the offending tube. The big bumper cars also have a doubler on the shock towers that rubbed a couple of tubes on my car. Had I not had the AFR heads, I would have chosen Hedman's.
