Picking up the new rebuilt transmission for my comet tomorrow. I know Ford says to use Type F but has any one used mercon V of some other fluid. Car is only for show no strip and very little street.

If it is for show, you could fill it with WATER and nobody would know the difference:p

    just kidding...good question...

I think the Type F just has more "junk" in it to make it create more friction between the clutches.

Type F actually has LESS junk in it, dextron actually has slip additives, for a soft shift, dont want grandma complaning about her new crown vic shifting so she can feel it. If you are serious about wanting your trans to last and shift rite, use 5w20 mobile one motor oil. Yes that rite motor oil, Have been using it in fleet and high performance trans for years, no draw backs except for the cost. If you use trans fluid use a good grade of type f.

I posed that question on another board (regarding a racing C4) and was surprised at how many different types and Brands were being used.

Yes, 5w20 was one of them. 'Would've never have thought that.

Personally, I gathered that anything that is compatible with "Type F" (Dexron...) was a safe bet.

What about running type F or 5w20 in an AOD or a chrysler 904 that has alot of miles on it ?

So the 5W20 will firm up my shifts? Can I add something to it to slow down the leaks (gaskets at tailshaft housing, mostly)

I have actually saved transmissions in our fleet by changing to motor oil. Or at the least given them some more time till overhaul.

TYpe "F" ATF will not burn up in your C4 transmission. My experience with dexron is that it burns under normal use in a C4.
Putting motor oil in a C4 will make it run when it shouldn'y because it has a higher viscosity. It does not have the additives that type "F" has for limited slip or anti-foaming. Put whatever you like in your transmission but if you buy one from me use type "F" only.

I say go w/ the type F also... the B&M Trickshift is essentially Type F... makes it shift harder and firmer. I dont even like the look of Dextron, looks burnt to me already
