Putting together a 70 Mav and the funds are tightening up down the stretch so am wanting to know if I can use the I6 Radiator for the 302 I just dropped in. I checked around for either a 71-72 radiator and the 2 core one is the one that shows up.
If you are running a mild or stock type engine, I say use it. Hope it is in good condition though, good water pump and even a salvage yard electric fan should handle it a bit better too. Used one for years in our race maverick with little or no probs. JMO
I'm running a 2 core on my semi-built 306 and it's keeping it's cool so to speak. I am planning on running an electric fan later this year though. (currently no shroud and a stock 6 blade)
When I replaced my 2 row core with a 3 row I found out the only difference between the 6 and V8 radiators is the mounting holes. My replacement radiator had both sets of holes. The 3 row replacement radiator is VERY expensive and I will be using a "universal" aluminum radiator if I ever have to do this again. They are not only cheaper but they cool so much better that a 2 row is more efficient than a 3 row brass radiator. Something to think about for the future.
There is a mustang radiator with the correct mounting and inlet holes at my local part store for $149, it's a 3 row. Have them pull the book out and take a look.
dude replace it with a 3 core! trust me on this one. your car would die if you drove it in the weather we have been having the last few days... i'm sure i don't need to tell you that i'm presuming the mounts for a 72 and below are differant? i didn't think they were. if they aren't just get one for any year. you know i might have a 3 core that was leaking that i had welded up... if you wanna buy that one let me know... i think i have it at work.. i can check it to see if it has any leaks.... if you wanna take the other peeps advise i got a good I6 2 core rad too
I hate it when I have a meaningful message typed out and it dissapears... Derrick, I wanted to know what you wanted for either of them. My mechanice thinks I need a 3 core and thought the 2 core would work until he saw it last night. He mentioned the inlet/outlets are too small and the core on the 3 rows are longer, thus able to hold more water. I honestly don't know. For the guys that are using them on V8 cars, what temp thermostat are you using. At this point, even if I use a 2 core just to get the car going... and can get the 3 core down the line. Have been at this wayyy too long and want to get the car on the ground and running. Derrick, thanks for responding and please PM me with prices. Thanks all
I'm running a 2 core w/ a 180 degree thermostat. I also have a 5" chrome fan schroud w/ a five blade ford stock flex fan. My 302 is stock & it keeps it nice & cool. If I ever replace it I will go aluminum 3 core to be safer & that way I can build the engine if I want. My 2 cents.
yes the inlet and outlets on I6 Rads are way smaller! you would have to use some adapters to make the hose fit on one side which ever side you choose. for thermostat also make sure you use the high flow stats like from mr gasket. this is a must! personally the 6 cyl fans is not my choice either they seem to be differant ones from what i have seen but the one i had i didn't like... i'd by a flex fan or some people like to run the clutch ones.. also i would put a fan shroud on the car too. if you can find an OE one great! rumors about the v8 fan shroud not fitting I6's is a bunch of crap it will work.
Derrick, Please get back to me. I PM'd you a few times regarding your radiators and cannot reply back so,,, Thanks, Richard
Derrick, I hate to keep calling you out on the post here and my intentions are good. I just want you to get back to me. You have something that I need. I have no problems buying a new radiator, just thought I'd give one of yours a shot since they were fairly cheap. Last call for alchohol...., please get back to me dude. Richard
