Hi, I did my usual stupid thing and bid on something before checking out if it would fit my car . I don't know why I don't learn with all the useless parts I've got in my garage. I bid on an AM/FM radio on eBay that looks like it will fit a 1973 Mav, but I'm not sure. Here's the link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...STRK:MEBI:IT&viewitem=&item=260164208409&rd=1 The knobs are 5-3/4" apart center on center, while my old AM is 6". That 1/4" doesn't worry me as much as the wires, which are missing the connection plug on the blue/black pair. Does any of this matter? If I can get the radio for $25-$50, it would be a good deal , but I don't want another misguided purchase cluttering up my garage! I have a secret audio, but I'm not happy with it. I'll put it up for sale here or on eBay if I can replace the radio with an original. Can I add an amp to this radio for better sound? What is the output on these old radios? Roz
That radio will fit the factory Maverick/Comet radio bezel perfect. I have one in mine. The price range you mentioned would be about right.
Great. I have the glovebox. There are several original AM/FM radios on eBay right now. It looks like a buyer's market. Roz
They were a good radio for their day. I have a couple set aside. Always like them, but for comparison to todays tech, forget it. In the end, yes you can hear it, and good enough for cruising. Someone on here has to have a schematic of a pigtail for you to wire up. Dan
I would grab it. I have one in my Sprint and it works great. Really needs a 4 channel amp though if you use modern speakers. Just make sure to get an amp with "high" or "full" power inputs. Then you can even feed a separate sub amp if you choose.
Mine has a tray. That radio looks the same other than the face plate mine says Philco, instead of Ford. Because mine is older.
Have a Picture of it installed? The correct AM/FM should be mono and have the same chrome bezel as the standard AM ...
I have a 79 in my 72 with package tray. It'll fit. I would love to have one with a chrome bezel to look more stock... But those seem harder to find. 71-73 Stangs use Philco stereo versions that look like that, black bezel and all. I believe the 69-70 had chrome bezels and stereo. Wonder why the Mavericks didn't come stereo? Dan?
My 73 has factory Stereo, 2 speakers in the kick panels, and 2 in the package tray. It's the first out of many Mavericks I've had with more than one speaker. Could have had something to do with the price, I wish I could find my 73 Dealer price book, how many FM stations were there in the early 70's??
Dave, interesting, I really never took notice of these cars ever having more than 1 speaker. I always assumed they just had the mono speaker in the dash. Learned something today, thankyou! If I would read my 76 owners manual, I would probably learn sumthin. Dan
My 1973 Grabber has EVERY deluxe option EXCEPT the AM/FM radio. I don't think there were many FM's worth listening to in 1973, at least not in most cities. Roz
There's another seller with NOS aftermarket radios for Mustangs and Mavericks from the '70's. He's asking $50 + $14 shipping (rounded up). He's got hundreds of them. Maybe we could do a mass buy from the Forum and get a discount. Does anyone know if these radios are as good as the originals, or not so hot? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=190156015502&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009 Roz
