My mom's 2004 Lincoln LS has suddenly developed a problem in the last week where it likes to blow the fuse for what the owners manual calls the "starter coil". And of course, out of three power distribution boxes in the car, it is the thoughest one in the car to get to since you got to wiggle your way up under the passenger side of the dash and pop a cover off the kick panel. And then the fuse is the hardest one in that distribution box to get to. It's just a small little 5 amp fuse. The car will start anywhere from 1-10 times without a problem before blowing the fuse again. This usually happens in conjunction with the LED screen in the instrument cluster flashing "APPLY FOOT BRAKE (P)". When you turn the key, absolutely nothing happens, engine won't crank over or anything.

Anyone got any ideas? As luck would have it, the warranty ran out on the car 10,000 miles ago, so I'm on my own maintaining it from here on out... The complete engine was replaced with one from a wrecked car with 20,000 miles back in May when the car had 63,300 on it, car currently has 85,100.

Well, the problem went away for over a week and now it just started doing it again tonight. Went out to eat and now the car won't start period. It's stuck in the damn parking lot at Wild Wing. Went through about 10 fuses, it just blows them one right after another. :cussing: Got up under the car and tried to crank it over manually by shorting the solenoid with a screw driver. The starter runs when you do this but it is not engaging. :hmmm: I don't know what the hell to do.

Hey Lance, sorry for not calling you, was not near a phone for most of the day. Were you able to find anything? Car is still sitting where we left it this time last night. They say it needs to be moved ASAP. Trying to avoid $90+ to have it towed back to our house.

edit: Just looked at the manual again, it says the fuse that is blowing is the "Starter Relay Coil", not just "starter coil".

Sounds like the starter has went bad and took out the solenoids. On late model Fords, there is a solenoid on the starter and one on the firewall as well. My 99 pickup did the same thing, but didn't blow any fuses. It would jump on the lower solenoid and spin, but not engage. Had it rebuilt, replaced both solenoids, works fine now....

Had it towed to Pep Boys this evening. We'll see what they say. I figure it is the starter also.

Well Pep Boys got it started with a screw driver. Now they sent it back to Ford because they say it's something with the factory security system and they don't have the equipment to figure it out...

Got the car back tonight. The guys at Ford said they had to trace the wiring harness four times to figure out where the problem was. Evidently when they swapped the engine, they forgot to snap the harness back into where ever it snaps into, so it was just hanging loose dangling around. Turns out the wires going to the starter got against the exhaust manifold and melted to it, they said this is also what caused the parking brake to freak out.

If I could actually SEE the exhaust manifolds for all the crap in the way, I guess I could have figured that out... Damn new cars.
