Cool pics, Jamie! That bush thru the grill reminds me of a 37 Ford truck I drug out of the woods a few years ago. It had a 16" pine tree growing between the bumper and frame, and it was touching both. I was wondering how in the heck I was going to cut it without it falling on the truck when I put my foot on the bumper to prop up a minute. All the sudden, WHAM! the front bumper fell off on one end, and me with powersaw in hand hit the ground! I got up, brushed myself off, and kicked the still attached end and it fell off too! The bolts were rusted paper thin. Needless to say, I hooked the winch up and dragged it on the trailer!

Didn't even think about that. I may go back tomorrow. I plan to take a closer look at the steering column in that car, and I'll check out the pedals also.

Hard to say... If I had to guess, I would say somewhere between $100-400..

Went back today. On closer inspection, the Mercury steering column seems to be quite a bit different then a Maverick column. Interestingly, the front turn signals are basically identical to sport lights, except about three times as wide... I thought about getting the lights in the doors, but they were a little pitted so I left them. The car also had disc brakes. The pedals as a unit won't work in a Maverick, but it looked like the covers on them could. I also came across a '63 Pontiac Bonneville (again, that's what they said it was, I did not verify the year), and it had a neat gauge pod in the center of the dash that popped out. If it wasn't pitted, I would have got it and mounted the gauges I have in it.

Great pics. We don't have yards around here that keep old cars. They crush them all!

They crush them regularly here too. Any given car will usually stay on the yard for 1-2 months usually.

Then it's amazing that there are still that many available pre-1980 cars.

Great pictures. I like going to the junkyard more than some woman likes to go to Walmart. I have a few pics of different cars, mostly Falcons, but a few Mavericks are in the mix. Pull-a-Part has great prices. Where else does a junkyard have covered picnic tables and Coke machines to cool off from the heat of the sun.

Man, we've crossed paths several times! I remember several of those cars at Pull-A-Part. Where were those other pics pics taken? Looks kind of like Johnson Auto Salvage? I know of a couple of other yards like that up in North GA and one in Copperhill, TN.

Now you’re freaking me out!!! I was born in Copperhill but I never have been to a junkyard up there. I got to admit, you know your junkyards when you see them. Some of the photos are from Johnson and the photos in the cow pasture are from Fowler's off hwy 92 in Griffin. I don't know about you but if I can't go in the yard to look around I'm not going.

Next time you're going to Copperhill, take Hwy. 515 through Blue Ridge to Hwy. 60, turn right onto 60 (Lakewood Hwy.), go straight through Mineral Bluff and keep a close eye out on the right side of the road for Pleasant Hill Rd. Unlike the rather large Pleasant Hill Rd. here in Gwinnett, this is a very small old two lane road that is easy to miss. Turn right onto Peasant Hill, and keep driving a couple of miles. Out of nowhere, you'll start to see a bunch of old cars in the woods and realize the road is going right through the middle of an old junkyard. :) There are some very neat old cars in there, but the old man that owns the place is kind of strange and generally wants to follow you around while you're looking, I guess to make sure you don't take anything. Tons of old Falcons, Galaxies and stuff like that in there. There are a couple of Mavericks and a '73 2 door Comet there also.

My grandparents live in the small town (if you'd even call it that) of Culberson, NC, not far from Copperhill. Culberson has it's own ZIP code, but it's such a small area that all the addresses there use the 28906 Murphy, NC ZIP. Culberson consists of a gas station and a post office, and a bunch of cows and horses. lol I have a good bit of family in that area, and ancestors that lived there back into the early 1900's.
