My grandpa and I were pulling a few old cars out, getting them ready to sell a few days ago. While cleaning up his old '57 Ranchero, I took notice of the old New Hampshire plate on it, with "429 SCJ" on it. This thing was built in the late 60's and raced up until the early 80's when the guy who built and raced it was killed. I realized that plate is not just a random issued plate, but in fact stands for the engine that was in the Ranchero at some point, a 429 Super Cobra Jet. Thought it was neat, so decided to pull it off and keep it.

Then we were moving his old '71 Mustang Convertible, and took notice of the plate on it. Must have seen it a million times before, but never thought much about it. It's a 1971 Georgia vanity plate, "FORDGT" on it. So I had to grab it too.

Got home and dug the plate off my old '74 Grabber out. What a head ache that plate was, cops would mistake the zero in 20 for the letter O. Then pull me over because it came back not being registered. Happened several times.

Now have the plates sitting on the little ledge above the window in my room. So I guess I collect old license plates now.

Car it came off of here. I took a ton of pictures of this thing if anyone cares. It was named "ISOLATION 2", no idea why. I know it was heavily raced here in GA in the late 70's, and I have ran into a couple of guys who remember seeing it going down the track. Don't know where all else it was ran.

I guess now I need to find the 1998 206 HFK "Georgia on my mind" plate off my dad's old Comet and put it up there too. I know we still have it around here some where. What's neat is you could clearly see that plate in the Popular Hotrodding article the car was in.

And here is my Sport Wheel. I almost feel bad I got such a ridiculous deal on this thing. It's kind of a long story how I got it. Some guys on another forum I'm on, which has nothing to do with cars, were discussing cars they had in the past in a thread in the off topic section of the forum. I posted a few pics of my '72, one of the interior showing the sport wheel I have in the car. Some guy down in Florida PM's me and says he used to have a Mustang II which was wrecked back in the early 80's. One of the things he had kept from it was the steering wheel. Wanted to know if I wanted it.

I say sure, how much you want for it? He asks me what I'd give him for it and I reply asking what it's worth to him. He replys and says it's just been hanging in his garage all these years not doing him any good, send him $1+ shipping and it's mine, catch is I have to send him a picture of it when I put it on my car. :) I really wasn't expecting much, he never mentioned what condition it was in. Well, when it arrived, I was shocked to pull a practically NOS looking sport wheel out of the box. :49:

I almost feel bad. I feel like I should send him some more money for it then just $1... but he says it wasn't doing him any good and he's glad it's went to someone who will use it. The stallion center on the horn button isn't even faded on this thing. I really can't find anything wrong with it. I don't know how many times I've almost bought one in half as nice condition on ebay for $150+. Guess my grandma isn't kidding when she says good things come to those who wait...

The New Hampshire plate could still be re-registered and used in New Hampshire, but you have to have the front and rear plate. I only have the rear, so it can't be reused. Considering the guy who drove it was killed in the early 80's (decapitated by something while riding a 4 wheeler, ouch) and my grandpa has owned it since 1984, there is no telling where the matching front plate is, if it even still exists.

The Georgia plate missed the cut off by one year. 1970 and older Georgia plates can be re-registered and used on 1970 and older vehicles. I contacted a collector and asked him what the plates would be worth. I am told the Georgia plate could bring $20-$50 on ebay, because it's a vanity plate. And if you get some guys bidding on it specifically because it says FORDGT, it could bring more. I thought the plate wasn't really in that great of condition, but he said it is actually in above average condition, most of the GA plates from those years did not weather very well. The New Hampshire plate is basically worthless. I don't plan to sell either of them, nor the sport wheel. ;)
