Well I am getting the idea that i might jump in and make my Car a Garage Fixture for a while, just wondering if I should put it on jackstands for tranny and motor removal? opinions? Also does anyone have a step by step article for engine removal what gets un hooked, pulled off, etc and in what order? Tips specific to our cars? I 'im swapping a 250 for a 302?

I bought an engine cradle for now, and will work slowly on getting the felexplate front sump pan and pump, gaskets, intake and carb [parts I need for the swap ( got the Maverick specific stuff in the Mail today from Chuck!! I hope to be abel to buy stuff and put it opnt eh motor then when everythign is all preent and accouitned for pull the 6 and begin.

I also plan to swap out a complete set of set belts, and I have a pair of buckets from a Deathscort, I want to see about fitting in place of the bench.

If you're going to take the engine and tranny out as one, I would definitely pit it as high as I could. Don't forget that you will need to have enough height to lift it out. I usually disconnect everything and push it outside, jack it up, and pull the engine and tranny.

I start by removing the hoses, radiator and disconnecting and tagging the electical wires. Headers or exhaust manifolds, tranny linkage, and any other hoses. Don't forget the driveshaft and I drain the tranny and seal up the tailshaft of the tranny. I also take off any engine accessories giving me more room to move the engine around. Just remember to mark anything you will reneed. I use duct tape and a sharpie.:)

removing the 250 will be a" cake walk"
if you are planning on scraping the 250...i would do as Don suggested...take as much off the motor as you can.
    starter, fan,waterpump etc. etc.
be safe and take your time...enjoy...:thumbs2:

Keep em coming guys :thumbs2:I am compiling everything before i get started, Is is a really big step for me :49:, I have done lots of peripheral stuff on cars, starters, alternators, fuel pump , filters, and a waterpump, but have had an aversion to doing a motor swap, and or rebuild:dizzy:, I got a quote from a mechanic that labor for the swap would be $900 and I was pretty much planning to save that up , but then I thought :idea:man this is a " fear "you have to face , take my time plan it , get advise, then proceed carefully and not get in a hurry, perfect time of year to start this , I will try to get the picts but I have to get my 20 bucks into stefan first, this is the first time in my life i have had a garage to work on my car in, soooo here goes:outtahere:, kep the advise coming guys 'cause i'll be countin' on your support, :thumbs2:can't tell you how much all you guys mean to me with the good advise and points of view:tiphat:! Motor comes tomorrow and the mounting pieces are in... !

The engine needs to come out on a fairly sharp angle (nose up). I use anything from a bolt with flat washers through the links to make a loop or an old tie down like in this picture. Don't throw the chain over the hook without securing it because it will slide on the chain and it could damage your car or possible pinch your finger off. In other words, the hook and the chain that is bolted (or hooked) to the engine needs to be like one. It's not that hard to pull an engine but you need to be safe doing it. Take your time and don't get in a hurry. Keep looking around to make sure everything is disconnected.

That is some GREAT advise.......It will defineately slide if the hoist hook is not fixed in one position. A engine tilter works great(y)

Here is a post I made some time back detailing how I pull engines. Lately I haven't been bothering to drain the trans fluid. Probably a good idea though if you don't have some way to keep it in the trans. I personally have never jacked the car up to remove/install the drive train.

Jamie this is awesome, just what I needed, though I am on hold, turns out the 5.0 I was going to buy wont turn over, the guy I was buying it from told me it was running when he pulled it out of the Mustang and that it would turn over, but then he double checked it for me before pulling the tranny off, and it is stuck, nice guy he called and said "hey your not gonna want his motor , I don't know what happend but it is frozen", so I gotta find another motor.

You didn't say what you are going to use to lift the motor out. A cherry picker, come along, a chain hoist?? Just thought the guys would like to know to help if you pull it out inside or out. Good Luck & be Safe!

In my garage with a hoist ( I guess that is a cherry picker), is on wheels and has an arm that sticks out to raise and lower the motor

You will need to have about 10 foot high ceiling in the garage or better for the boom to clear. I would pull the engine outside if possible. Once the engine is out push the car back in the garage. Some antifreeze, oil and ATF will leak out 9 out of 10 times. Don't forget to duct tape some plastic on the tailhousing or you will have a mess to clean up.
