I am looking at a classified ad for a 59 Ranchero rear end for sale... The ad says it's an 8" rear... ??? Did this vehicle come with an 8" in 59? I thought they were 9" rears that year. The ad only has a blurry pic of the back of the rear, and 59 9" rears were smooth backed, so I can't tell the difference. I might go look at it if they didn't make 8" rears that year. Also, I know the car/wagon rears from 59 fit our cars, but what about the Ranchero rears? I am aware that the later Rancheros have a unique spring spacing, but have no info on the 59s. Anything will help. If the spring pads are same as 59 cars, and 8" rears weren't in Rancheros that year, I will take a trip to check it out. Thanks! Dave:Handshake
I got 2 57 Ranchero rear ends from Dennis a few years ago. They are both 9" rears. I don't think they had anny 8" rears in them.I'll correct that before Dennis does. I think 1 was from a wagon.
Is the spring spacing the same as the car? I am trying to determine if this is something to fit a Maverick.
We are putting a 58 rear end in a 72 Mav. The spring perch spacing is the same as a Maverick, Falcon, Granada and classic Mustang. I think all 57-59 Fords had 9"
You are using a 58 Ranchero rear? I know the car and wagon rears are same. I am leary of the Ranchero rear because on almost any other years I know of, the Rancheros have unique spring spacing. I have owned several Rancheros, just none from the 50s. So I don't know what to think.
They are bolt in. The Rancheros and Wagons came with bigger axle bearings. Of the 2 rears I sold Don, 1 was out of a wagon
Cool. What was the usual gear ratio with these things? I have a 4.11 Trac-lock waiting, but it's a little low for the engine as it is now.
mine came out of a 59 hardtop ...small bearing, weird gear ratio , use the 4.11's and put a 5 speed in the car. 1st gear will be useless but you'll love it .
I have a wide ratio toploader. 1st gear is 2.78, which is awesome with a 302 and 4.11 gears... As long as your engine can spin up fast. The engine I have right now can't rev that fast. It feels like a granny geared truck, dumptruck, when the engine can't spin fast on low gears. I had that problem with my stock 351c/toploader/4.11 combo... So the 4.11s came out of that car. 3.00 gears are not terrible with a mild 302 and wide ratio. Those 3.10s might be nice... if that is what they are. Probably not too much of a difference. I had a Ranchero with 3.25 gears once, that was a nice street gear.
Nope... it's from a car I had a 3.70 and its a WAR case in my Falcon ('59 Ford). Haven't removed the chunk off the other one going in the Mav yet ('58 Ford) but it has a 3.56 on the tag. The 6 cylinder cars have a lower ratio than the Y8's. I heard the wagon and Ranchero's are a tad narrower (1/4") flange to flange than the cars.
