I posted this off topic accidently too...

    Hey all,
Let me through something at you and tell me what you think.
    Details first:
    1999- F150 4x4
    5.4
    61,000 miles

    Now the issues,
I dropped the trans pan at 30k replaced the fluid and filter. (bout 5 years ago)
Now this past Sept. at 60k I did the same thing only to find mounds of shrapnel in the pan as well as a hand full of bearings. Burnt and nasty fluid too. I still changed the fluid (syntheic) and filter
I have no issues with the trans what-so-ever .
I also have no $$$$ to get it rebuilt if need be. The avg. quote was in the 3500 range. Hard to hear since the truck Blue Books in the 4000-4250 range. (really sucks since the gas prices went up and no-one wants them anymore...)

I never towed ANYTHING with this truck in the 10 years i've owned it. Never traveled through the mountains or did anything stupid either with it. (just figured i'd mention that to answer a few questions that may come up)

What the hell could it be...?
Should I just let it die completely and get everything replaced...?
Did ford have issues with the F150's 4x4 trans in 1999...?
    Any ideas...???
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Jay.....

Maybe the 60k miles in 10 years. Lots of stop and go driving? Short trips?

My experience with those transmissions tells me they shift pretty damn slow. Too much clutch slippage for me. Do you know if they make a shift kit for it? Probably a good investment to save the rest of the transmission

Short trips, YES... I live about a half a mile away from work.
Stop and go driving, Yeah, that too... I live near Chicago, A stop light or stop sign on nearly every corner.

So, You're saying it might be an "easy fix" so to speak. I would much rather have a shift kit put in vs. replace the whole thing.

"Fix" - No, not really. It won't fix anything, but it WILL help preserve what is left of your transmission. The tranny will shift quick and clean, instead of slow and smooth. Might jerk you around sometimes, but it will save your clutches.

Here is a good read of how to install one -

Sounds to me like you have lost the intermediate lock-ring and the thrust bearing along with it. The only way to fix it is a complete rebuild. Give Broader Performance a call for prices.
