My uncle has an 87 cherokee that has a 242ci motor and a 5spd. It is in pretty rough shape and he is wanting to make a cutdown of sorts out of it to run in the fields. He asked me if there was a points distributor available for this motor since he doesn't want to mess with the electronic ignition. Thanks for any help
That's funny, really an example of the generation gap... I always switch to electronic ignition because I don't want to deal with points. I'll bet there is one of course. That's an ancient platform.
Although i'm not 100% sure of the year models i do know that the 258s will work. A dizzy for a 258 was available in either form, Points or electronic. But a cheap ignition box would be all that would be needed to keep what he has. And for the prices these days there is no reason to not go electronic. http://store.summitracing.com/partd...M-850602&N=700+400304+322383+115&autoview=sku
thanks, the reason he wants to go to points is for simplicity. He is also wanting to put a 1 barrel on it. I know the electric fuel pump is messed up and possibly some of the electronics. this will only be drove in the pasture.
You can swap the 4.2 liter intake and carb set up to the 4.0 if you want. Its a feedback system up here though. Wouldnt wish that carb on my worst enemy. Maybe you can find an older carb for the 4.2 intake. Usually goes the other way around here. Junk the 4.2 crap and go with a 4.0 EFI setup. Had 4.0 Cherokees as my daily driver for about 15 years now. Luv em and wish they still built them.
Get an early 80's duraspark unit and put in it, heck if you pulled most of the parts off of your car it would work. Dont put one of the garbage carter 2v carbs on it from the 80's you cant get the parts to fix them right anymore so it is not even worth trying. You can use the intake and exhaust from all of the earlier amc straight sixes from the 70's they will just sit a little higher than the original did. To give you a good idea of how these motors have changed I bought a 4.0L cam for my 4.2l/4.0l hybrid and it is the same cam for the 4.0, 4.2, and the old 232. The best recomenddation I can make on the carb is to go with a weber conversion, there a couple of hundred bucks but well worth it.http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/product_p/wk550-34.htm they are a sequential 2v carb so they work under the same principal as a 4v carb and are well worth it.
