is $195 a good price to pay for a 300-six?

the ad says it "will need new rings or just use for parts." it says it ran hot as well. that might help my motor-less wagon problem... after i buy a 4-door. if i don't buy it and its a good deal, i might be able to find someone who can use it. not much info, heres the link: http://littlerock.craigslist.org/cto/1139404096.html
    waddaya think?
(last one i saw was just a block at pettit jean the guy was sellin for $300. don't know if it did sell.)

If that really is all it needs is rings, and it really was recently rebuilt, it's probably a decent deal. I bet he'd take 150 if your standing there with cash.

yea, thats part of the reason i was checking here. im not much of a motor person, so i figured there's some on this board that might be able to tell me. i don't know if ill buy it, just checking out the possibility. i have a hundred, but id rather save it for the four door im tryin to buy.
... wonder what it'd be like in a maverick... other than a tight fit. im sure its been done, but i think ill stick with my little 200.

I've got to agree. How hot? Did it crack the head or block? I wouldn't give much for it unless I needed the internals....the block and / or head may be toast...

Well, I've got a 300 out of a '78 E150 van that you could have... but it needs a total rebuild, and it's in NC.

thanks, but i don't know if im headed towards north carolina anytime in the forseeable future. like i said, i'm just considering if i really need/want it. this just seemed like a possible good deal. the ad says it has a good head, so that's one plus. i don't know about the block, though if they say it needs rings, why not mention a cracked block as well? but people can be weird. you never know.

I would pass. 300's aren't hard to find and don't hold much value. If it has run hot the block and head might be craked. It will need rebuilt at the least and that will run over $1000

Just curious but can a 300 inlinesix replace the 250 inlinesix in a Maverick with a c4 transmission?

It has been done, but it's not a direct bolt in. You would have to make mounts and possibly relocate the radiator.. Not sure about hood clearance either. It will bolt right up to the transmission, though.

Even if there is hood clearance the swap wouldn't be worth it unless I upgrade the entire suspension for it's size and weight, much more aftermarket parts available for the 300 I6. Thanks for the info

What is it out of? Seems with 9 inches, the narrower they are, the more they are worth. If it's just out of an old pickup or something like that with an open diff, I wouldn't give more then $80-$100 for it.

sounds about right. I have some out of 73-79 trucks and I can't get $100 for one. A truck will also have a different bolt pattern than a mav
